Minimum battery for electric start
« on: October 02, 2015, 07:06:24 AM »
Could a battery like the Shorai LFX14A2-BS12 power the electric start on a CB550?

If so, can I go more compact? If not, what is the minimum battery requirements to retain the electric start? What pros/cons should I consider when trying to minimize the footprint of my battery while keeping electric start functioning?

After spending about $500 on lithium batteries and all of them breaking I now use a cheap Walmart battery. Still working after a couple years.

The shorai looks like the same size so it should crank it over.

I have a CB450 and I shrunk the battery from a YB12A-A 12ah 180cca to a YB7C-A 8ah 110cca the result is just barely having enough power to start it. any smaller and I would be out of luck.

My Walmart battery is 3aH with 50 cca and doesn't have a problem turning over my 450, 500, 550, and 750.

That Shorai is used by many, successfully I might add. The Amp/HR rating is as important if not more given the anemic charging systems in these bikes. To electric start, about 100 cranking might do it. But the stock battery was 12 Amp/HR, the unit you listed is 14.

Thanks for the info! I'm a battery noob, so I'm not sure what the 100 cranking is in reference to.

Update

Ah I see the cranking amps now. So I guess I could go less? I'd only want to if it meant a smaller battery footprint.

I have that Shorai on my 550. It's great and small enough to fit nicely under my seat hump. I recommend it.
