Hi,
I don't know if i have posted before. So i'll reintroduce myself. Bought a 1977 Honda CB550F Supersport. I call her Peach. Orange tank and a blast to ride. Been working on it on and off. scaling down from the touring bike style the PO had made it into.
Now I have reached a little issue (that I hope won't turn into a major one) that could need a little help with.
The previous owner relaced the original hub to 16in rim. So to bring it back to a 18in rear I bought a 1974 CB550 rear wheel on eBay. I installed the other day, using both '77 spacers (spindle and normal spacer). Mounted everything with the 1977 CB550 brake plate. So I had a '74 rear wheel with '77 spacers and drum brake plate and spindle. All seemed to fit until..
Issue 1 – When I tighten the spindle axle nut is impossible to torque (manual says approx 60ftlbs) and have the wheel spinning. as soon as I tighten it too much wheel refuses to spin. Right now the wheel spins but the rear axle bolt is lose. I have the cotter pin in though.
Issue 2 – the drum brake plate sits on there nicely (the '77 cb550 one) but it catches on the '74 hub i.e. isn't floating so when i did a test drive and i had a bunch of metal shavings on the hub.
So there is an issue with the hub vs brake plate vs frame somewhere.
So what are my options in terms of solutions?
should i get the '74 cb550 brake plate?
relace original wheel?
install extra spacers (if so where?)
could anyone give me an idea?
thanks
c
