True Bob but, at least if you volunteered, you had somewhat of a say as to what you
did and where you were going. I was still in high school, when I signed up on the delayed
enlistment for the Air Force and actually went in on August 19, 1966. My Dad is the reason that I
did that reserve time. After I got Discharged from the Air Force, He started telling me that I
should apply for a Dual Status Civil Service job, which meant that if you were to be hired for the
job, you had to join the Army Reserves as part of the deal. Well, I finally listened to him, applied
for a Civil Service Mechanic job at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas, was hired Dec 26, 1972 and joined the
Army Reserves on Feb, 1973. Put in 24 yrs there and retired as an Equipment Inspector after
being in 2 different levels of maintenance. We worked alot of the equipment that came from
Arkansas to go to Kuwait and also worked with equipment that went to Honduras for
Humanitarian Projects and went to Honduras to prepare the equipment for return to the states.

Bill,

You're correct of course. As I recall, if you wanted a branch other than the army, you had to enlist, or if you wanted some say in your MOS (at least that's what they called it in the army) you had to enlist as well. The trade-off was either 3-4 years enlistment vs. 2 years as a draftee. I took my chances, figuring the odds were 8 to 1 in my favor. ;)

I hope you all realize that your service was even BIGGER than service to your country.  Because of the role the US plays in the world, your service meant preserving a free and safe society in many places in the world.  Sounds corny, but a noble thing indeed...

It is still true today... (anyone got a little face that salutes?  :))

Bob,    I hope you didn't think that I was saying that a person should have enlisted and not be drafted. I wasn't. Neither choice was best for all. I felt that enlisting was best for me, so I did it. I have the same appreciation for all Veterans, no matter how they became one. And for the record, in the Air Force, instead of MOS, it was AFSC. I don't know what terms were used in the other branches. Ha, even when you enlisted though, you still were dreaming if you thought you were going to be stationed where you picked. Seems like we had a 1st, 2nd and maybe even a 3rd choice and I always went somewhere else. I didn't figure on getting Arkansas, so I picked Oklahoma and got Charleston AFB in South Carolina. That's Close ::) I did asked for Japan for my overseas tour though and got it ;D Then, I knew I was coming back to the states and I'd heard that Little Rock AFB was getting the F4 Phantoms (which I worked on in Japan) and so I selected it. I went to Hamilton AFB in California that time. Got discharged from that one and I pointed my 69' road runner torwards Little Rock, drove for about 28 hours (Stopping only for gas food and drink, all at the same time & an hour  nap at Flag Staff, Arizona) and arrive home at about 1am on the last day. In closing, I Totally Respect All Those Who Served (and are serving) In Whatever Way. We All Deserve Respect For That.

                                                Salute,  ;)    Bill
