Salute to all Veterans of any war.
I went to England when I was 15 and joined the British merchant navy from 61-66 as an apprentice.
The ship I was on MV Port Fairy happened to be slap bang in the middle of the Cuban crisis! in the Windward Passage i thought it was great but I had NO idea of how close we were to being toast
I then joined the Royal Australian Navy in Mar 67. Became an Aircraft Mechanic Airframes & Engines then a SAR Diver/Crew Chief specialising in Rotary Wing. Naturally I become a member of the (RANHFV) Royal Australian Navy Helicopter Flight Vietnam Oct 69-70 which was then totally intergrated into the 135th AHC US Army at Bear Cat then Dong Tam in the Mekong Delta. What an interresting time as a E6 Crew chief Prick of a place.
Any way, retired from the RAN (navy) in late '77.It took 30 years to get my Air Medal from the US Army, but thanks to some great people eventually got it.
Happy veterans day sorry I cannot be in Black Mountain NC or KW to help celebrate
Dave Australia.

Army right now.  En Route to Afghanistan.  Flew out on Armistice Day.  How's that for irony?  :)

Good luck on your tour. Keep your head down.

Yeah GG, What Bob said. You DO take care and get back to us soon as possible. Do you know how long you'll be gone? You'll be in our thoughts and our prayers.

Dave, You've got quite a history there and alot of memories. You are to be
commended. Closest I ever got to any conflict was, just as I arrived at Misawa AFB in Japan,
North Korea had captured the Pueblo and we went on 24hr Alert (loaded and ready to fly to
Korea at a moments notice) and this lasted for a little while. During my tour in Japan, some of
the 3 Squadrons of F4s (stationed at Misawa) would rotate to a base in South Korea and
spend 2 weeks on an Alert Site with planes loaded with Nukes (that made me just a bit
nervous) You see, They told us that if the planes that were armed, ever moved you might as
well dig a hole and kiss your A## goodbye because we were going to WAR!!
(On that note: Later, after I got married, this happened. One morning, the alarm went
off and in my head I didn't hear the alarm, I heard that Alert Alarm and , before my wife could
stop me, I had my pants on and was at the front door. She asked me what I was doing and
the only thing I could figure out was I was going to send off my F4C to take care of
          intruders.)  :D
Just as I was getting close to leaving Japan, North Korea shot down an EC121
Electronics Surveylance ACFT and we went back on 24hr alert. Gotta tell you that I've got a
real admiration for those who were in combat or anything close. No matter, we ALL served
(& are serving) because it takes all of the TEAM to properly perform the given task.

Be safe, Groovie.  My prayers are with you.

THANK YOU to all who have served and to those who are serving now.  I read a lot of US military history, and the one thing I've learned is that they are all our greatest generations.  The history I have read -- from every conflict and every war -- makes me swell with gratitude and pride.

Recently, as a technology consultant, I had the honor of attending a lunch seminar at an Air Force Base.  I cannot duly express the degree of intelligence, professionalism and camaraderie exhibited by the men and women there -- from a two star general down to airmen.  Some choose to scoff at our service men and women.  Those who have spent time with them, and those who have read about them know that they are our best, and that they honor us with their service.
