A Few Random .....
« on: March 16, 2016, 08:01:14 AM »
Questions.
Often Honda OEM parts are not available ....... what parts do you like in the aftermarket field (ex. do you think J & L make decent carb rebuild kits ?? If not, who do you think does?)  ......
Where is the best place to track down Honda part numbers ?
Is there any Honda CB750 SOHC  bike  (year of build) that you feel is definitely a better bike than other years ?

Thanks and thank goodness Spring seems to be here ....

Buy OEM Keihin jets from jetsrus.com
For the 'soft' parts needed for a carb rebuild, i buy kits from 4into1.com with viton orings and bowl gaskets.

I use cmsnl.com to look up any and all part numbers.
a search of the part number at partzilla.com will show all the other bikes that use the same part.

I'm with Flybox1 on this.

To add, CMSL.com is a decent place to order parts from, not just to look up parts numbers. If you have big enough order it can offset the shipping costs, and their prices can work in your favor depending on the current Euro to USD exchange rate (assuming you're in the states). They sometimes have oddball stuff in stock that I couldn't find anywhere else. The last order I placed got to me in Indiana in less than 2 weeks.

Avoid Keyster rebuild kits. OEM is the way to go with carb stuff, and it's usually just the rubber bits that need replacing. A lot of times you get what you pay for with aftermarket items. Emgo is generally on the low end of things and pretty commonplace. People report issues with parts like ignition switches from them, though I don't have personal experience with that. I've generally been happy with K&L branded parts. I installed a petcock from them last year and it works as it should. OEM is preferred if available. Places like cycleX and APE racing offer some really nice aftermarket and high performance items.

Oh, and my CB750 is the best (of course).  :)

They were the "first" CB750's, except for the ultra-rare pre-production units. There were only four pre-production units known to have been created, and only one or two can be accounted for today.

RE : Best oil to use ??? Based on Flybox's response on the best 750 to buy...
True, but it is a fact that these engines and clutches do not do well with oils containing friction modifiers or detergents, and oils with high zinc content help protect internals.
There are a few oils which fit this description.  BelRay EXL is one.  There are others.

So ....... what's all the mystique about the "sandcast" engines ??

It really comes down to value, since not many were made, they are not easy to come by and when you do see one for sale, very expensive.

BTW - sandcast was the manufacturing method on which the engine cases were made.

Zinc thing is kind of interesting ..... mechanism of action ?? I remember when they used to warn people not to use high detergent oils on older high mileage engines ......... maybe the gunk was holding the engines together ?  Ha
