What's a good offer for a bike like this?

Hi everyone,

     I found out about a 1976 cb 750 from a friend that's for sale. The guy rode it one season and then put it in a garage for 5 years. He said the caliper was frozen onto the front brake, the rear taillight doesn't work, the taillight is off an indian, and that the carbs need rebuilt. I'm also guessing the tires aren't the best either. He said that he wasn't sure of a price but that he paid $1300 for it 5 years ago. Any opinions?

Condition is everything. It's been sitting for 5 years, so I'd say it's worth less than the $1300 he paid for it. Does it have a title?

Yes it has a title. I'm not sure about condition unfortunately.

 I would offer 1/2 what he paid.. if he squawks  tell him to fix the issues and you will pay more.. they  almost never will fix it..that is why its for sale....

Rule of thumb for old bike purchase....

If it's not a rare collector's item, then it's worth generally $1 a cc....IF you can ride it home!

If you can't, then deduct the cost to get it to that condition, and, at $70/hr shop labor, before long he will owe you to take it off his hands!

It pays to know ballpark repair cost ahead of time....

Carb job....$300+, tires $250+, Front brake job 100+, new tail lite $50, $70/ hr to sort out the electrics + parts $who knows......provided you can even find a shop that will take on the work!

But, the good news is a good frame with clear title is worth a hundred or two IF it is in HIS name!

A $500 offer to a buddy may be a little offensive, I was thinking $800-900.
I've bought quite a few 750's in this price range.

$1 a cc [for a rider] is no longer a standard we can go by, unfortunately.

Also really depends on condition..stock body parts in runnable condition are a plus..if it loks good make an offer..if it looks lke he paid too much at 1300 and its a real pile.. Then pass on it..

Well I ended up getting the bike for $250 and even though it sat for 5 years I got it running yesterday. There's a lot of non stock parts on it but I'm happy with it. Thanks for all of the input guys!

$250 gives you a lot of headroom to work with. That's great. But it's also probably pretty fair considering what it might need to get it where you want it. Congrats!

Great job, Winkster! As has been said, you've got lots of comfortable wiggle room on that price to get that baby up to where you want it. 8)

Wink...nice find great price from a buddy. That's what buddies do is give great prices. What are your plans for this bike? Maybe restore back to original or just ride as is? She looks good.

Well this bike is going to be my "beater bike" for the time being. I'm going to repair the front brake and sort out the wiring issues (turn signals, brake, and horn) and just leave the rest pretty much as is. I might fix it up later but as you can see in the picture below I need to finish my 1971 750 first!

Great buy for that price. In the CT/NY area that bike would have gone over a grand easy. Everyone around here thinks they have a "Rare" bike for sale. Good luck with whatever you do with it.

You might even get by with cutting the tubes back to stock length, removing the spacer, and tapping the cut off tubes for the top caps?

At any rate a good deal!

And just to clarify.....you didn't buy it from a buddy anyway, did you? Your buddy just knew about it? Or maybe I just misunderstood your orig post?

Screaming deal. I paid 600 and 300 CAD for my two '78s, and they sure weren't running! I might've been able to get away with just a quick carb cleaning to fire it up, but I knew I was taking em right down anyway :D

Yea it wasn't my friends bike. My friend sold his bike to the guy I got this 750 off of. I couldn't believe I got it for that price. But it would take a LOT to get it back to original. I'm just glad I have something to ride while I redo my other 750. My goal is to put as little as possible into it and just enjoy it. Once the other bike is done maybe I'll work on this.
