1978 CB750f super sport HELP!!!
« on: November 12, 2006, 07:01:30 AM »
I recently purchased this bike and quickly tore it apart.  This is the first "honda" I've ever owned and I've had about 70 plus bikes.  It's been about 12 years since I tinkered with jap bikes and back then I mainly messed with 500 H1's..  My problem is this, I have no doubt I could put this bike together without photos but they sure would be helpful..  I have warning decals that I'd like to put back in the original locations and I'd like to put the bike back together correctly.  It would've make life easier had I taken photos of the dismantling process, but I failed to do so.  Could someone send photos or direct me to someone that has photos of a 78 CB750 supersport?  I would greatly appreciate it!!!  Thanks...  I live in Ft. Wayne Indiana and if someone in this area owns a CB750 supersport that would also work, I just want to take several hundred photos.   ;D  I've learned a lesson from all this..  Don't dismantle a bike your not familiar with and not take photos..  I never took photos of my H1's as I was dismantling, but I'm also very familiar with these particular bikes.  Man, those little 500 H1's could scream...   Anyhow, I'd appreciate the help....

I've got a lot on my other computer. Well not as many as I should hvae taken. Once I got the parts back from the painters and such, it was marathon time to get it together. I was going to take shots of the home porting job I did on the head for MRieck, but that too got bypassed in haste to buttom up the top end.

But for cautionary decal location I made note of those before media blasting and such. Tuesday I'll try to post whay I got for disassembled picts. There are two that go on the chain guard for tire and chain information. The battery vent tube routing and carb overflow decals were stuck on the inner fender and were placed haphazardly. The battery tube was at about a 25 degree slant from centerline and the carb overflow about 40 degrees or so. Looked like a worker was eager to go home that day. And they were indeed the originals.

Here's a couple that I found on this machine. The helmet holder decals are correct, as is the tank warning decal. The oil decal is incorrect and should be on the actual tank top - not on the sidecase. I put this one on the sidecase as a throwback to the earlier K models. No real reason, I just felt like it.

I truly appreciate all the help..  I believe I've learned a lesson, the next bike I restore I'll take photos of each part I remove.  I may keep my eyes open for another 78 super sport and take a ton a photos once I find one?  I thought about purchasing another if I could find one priced right?
I have another quick question..  Has anyone changed the top end gaskets on these?  My bike has 24,000 so I assume it won't need a complete top end rebuild?  If it's not too much trouble whatever photos ya'all have of a 78 super sport please send to my email address  snickram@yahoo.com  jpg format if possible?  Thanks for the photos everyone has sent allready..  This should help...

...I've did the top end on all of mine...my logic is while I have the motor out, it nice to take a peek at the inside, and might as well change all the gaskets while I'm in there.  The topend gasket kit is under $100.  The 77F I have now only had 17K on it, and it was leaking, so I think its more a function of time rather than miles.

...also, I don't know if u'r doing the carbs or not, but here is a blog I've put together on cleaning the carbs..  http://blog.360.yahoo.com/blog-Sg4KjsE8erQjVxgd6tTWVeKm_ww-?cq=1

My gasket was also leaking so this is why I'll be changing..  I've allready cleaned the carbs and I believe everything looks good.  I only have a couple concerns that I'll address as I get closer to getting the bike back together, right now I have a ways to go.  When dismantling the carbs I noticed the Air/Idle Screws were all missing the o-ring, I assume that's important?  Where would I get these?  So when I put this idle screw back in I put the o-ring in then the washer and finally the spring - correct?

Currently the bike is completely apart and I'll be tackling the motor soon.  I plan to use 120 main jets with the following modifications:  filter pods and kerker 4 into 1 header, I believe this is the correct size jets?  Is changing the top end gaskets relatively strait forward?  Is there anything I need to be made aware of?  Thanks for your time..

Oh, that carb dismantling description was the best I've seen yet..  Nice.. I also noticed your BDU's are you in the military?  I served 20 years in the Airforce..  Well, thanks again...

...the order is spring, washer then O-ring.  I think the only place u'r gonna find the oring is at a hardware store, but to be honest, I don't have them in my bike right now.  The top end is pretty straight forward, if you don't have a manual get one, and follow the steps.  120's are a good starting point if u'r going to pods...after you get it back on the the road, read the plugs, and go from there.

You might want to consider replacing the cylinder studs. General concensus is that the stock studs tend to stretch with time and abuse helping with the leaking. APE has heavy duty studs which are larger diameter & stronger.
