CB 750K valve cover gasket questions.
« on: March 20, 2016, 09:16:58 AM »
Hello,
Sorry if this is a FAQ, but I couldn't find anything specific in the archives.

Can anyone offer any advice or suggestions regarding the installation of  a new valve cover gasket on a ’76 CB750? The first time I did it,  I thought I’d gotten it right but it leaked at different places.  Tightening the bolts down more didn’t help. I have another gasket ready to go, but I don’t want to screw this on up as well.

Some of my questions are:

Does anyone know what the torque for those bolts are.
Is there a particular order I should be tightening them down.
Is it recommended to use any gasket material to help hold the gasket in place?
If so, what kind. Are Permatex products any good?

Thanks in advance.
Barry

I think the biggest thing to realize is that its not a symmetrical.  there is a right side and a wrong side.  the best area to see this is the cutouts of the #2/#3 plug areas.   one is larger than the other.  Be sure its aligned properly.
Some gasket makers have a tiny cutout on the inside edge, noting that this particular side should go on the #1 cyl side.

Hondabond is recommended, but I used threebond 1184 on my cam cover gasket.  No leaks and its easy to remove if you have to remove the cover.

Permatex Ultra Grey is the same as Hondabond. Good stuff to use SPARINGLY. Everything else Flybox said is very good advice, especially about getting the correct side up!

They are M6 bolts, so they go to 8#, or 96 inch-pounds.

I tightened mine like a drum head (example)...

Put a dab of anti-seize on them, too... especially if you went to stainless.
