Shopping list - have i missed something ?
« on: March 20, 2016, 02:29:23 PM »
Currently about to reassemble my engine, so i can ride to school and save some money (instead of paying the bus fare.......... :'( :'( )
The engine was dissasembeled due to cam chain rattle and a cylinder/crankcase gasket leak. (CB400F)
I was thinking:
Complete engine gasket set
engine oil seal set
Oil filter
Cam chain guide
Cam chain tensioner
Cam chain damper/rubber
Primary chain (advised by local mc-mechanic) Assuming i can remove the pistons and slide the primary chain out without loosening the crankshaft stretch bolts (which will cost a lot....)

Could i be missing some valve-related items?
Best regards.

Don't know much about the 400f but your question is not easy to answer! Everyone is different on what they would replace on having the engine open. Why aren't you replacing prison rings? And yes your missing valve related thing.... Because you don't have any on your list. Not saying you need them but if the engine is apart then you should be checking every part and making sure they are up to spc.

Case sealant if they get split.  Sounds like the bus ride is a cheaper deal   :D   Hopefully everything goes smooth and well for you.

You can probably skip the primary chain unless the 400F has more than 30k miles on it. They are pretty overbuilt. If the cam chain slipper and tensioner are in bad shape, go ahead and replace them: if they are not missing chips and chunks, they will be fine. You might want to replace the piston rings and hone the cylinders (use a long-stone brake hone, about $10 at auto parts stores, and a drill to run it). Turn the head upside-down, then fill each combustion chamber with some thin oil (like ATF or 3-in-1 oi) and see how long it takes to leak out: if it holds it for more than 15 minutes, it will run OK. This was the old "college overhaul" when I had my bike shop and resurrected many Hondas for college kids in those days. They won't be racers, but with a new battery and clean carbs they will run a long time.  ;)
