My after market straight pipes sounds almost like yours.
Could you explain about you charging problem a little more? Did you wire it to have the headlight always on?

I guess these bikes were meant to run on 1/2 their charging system while the headlite was switched off (to save power), and then once the headlite was turned ON, the rest of the charging system was turned on. Back then it wasn't a law to have a headlite on all the time like it is now. The way we wired it the first time was we just ran power to the headlite and called it a day, so basically I was pulling too much power than the bike could keep up with (thus me pushing the bike 5 city blocks a few weekends ago ::)). So all we did was jump the stock wiring so the FULL charging system is working 100% of the time, thus no charging issues..

Like I said, I had the bike out last night for about an hour and did all kinds of riding. Everything from 40mph cruising to stop and go traffic to me WACKING my buddy Danny on his Triumph bobber at a stoplight race (his bike is fast but by the time he goes to shift I fly past him ;D), and the bike didn't miss a beat. I had a bright ass headlite the entire time. Their are a few little issues I need to address before I take it out again, but nothing major..

unless you put in a larger wattage bulb, the charging system can handle having the light on all the time.
i believe the bike can handle a 50w bulb.
you may have to cleanup some of your bullet connectors

Not what Proteal was saying, see the attached wiring diagram.  PT is not using the headlight on/off switch.  Thus in the off position, the yellow and white wires from the alternator are not connected, thus the charging system is not running at full capacity.  PT had connected the headlight to be on all the time, and did not realize he needed to jumper the yellow and white wires together as well.

Thanks Mike for posting that. That is EXACTLY what happened. I wasn't aware that these bikes had a funky charging system, but now I do  ;D No worries now, as the bike is charging fine, and my H4 headlite is brite as hell ...

P.s-->
I dont use bullet connectors on my bikes, everything is soldered/heat shrinked, and then eletrical taped to insure a long lasting connection ;D

* * * CB/CL450 Cafe/Tracker update 5/10/07 * * *

Took the CB450 out last night to get some seat time and get used to the bike alittle more. I rode it to the monthly Ton-Up Chicago meeting in the city, and as soon as I pulled up I hear , "So what truck towed your bike here ?"  ;D It was all in good fun, from the last time these guys saw the bike in the back of my buddies truck dead in the water..

The bike runs great. Their is a slight hanging of the throttle when you rev it, but that isn't too much of a big deal. The thing starts right up, has good power (crazy RPM), and comes back down to a nice "thumper" idle. I actually met up with board user CHRISF, as he was in Chicago for business. He got to check out mine and the other members bikes, and grab a bite to eat. It was cool to meet the man behind the computer (so to speak). Great guy...

I am going to meet up with MKRAMER tonite to have some dinner and get some CB550 parts for my dual-disc project. This is gonna be long term, as cash is def. kinda tight at the moment. I still need to source out a new master that can handle dual discs, get new brake lines, and some sorta splitter/y block.. Both rotors are gonna be heavily cross drilled to keep up the racer/lite look the bike has going. Also need to re-design the brake rearset so I can actually use the rear brake (angles are all messed up)..

More updates to come.. ;D

PRO you mention needing a 'Y', is this splitter for the dual brake?, why not use a double banjo? then you dont have to fab anything up....

Well Proty, as much as I hate seeing old classics chopped, cafe'd and just trashed by young blokes with no respect for their history after surviving intact for so many years, I gotta say I actually like what you've done with that 450, so well done!

Please don't paint that beautiful original tank with truck bed liner or tire paint, or any other "wonder coating" though, it looks great now, so don't mess it up! Cheers, Terry. ;D

I did allot more "building" on this bike, where my CB750 was more of a "bolt on" bike, and I think it shows. I have gotten more respect/props/thumbs-up's/praise on this bike the 5 times I have had it out then the 2 or so years I have owned the CB750.

And don't worry about the tank. If anything, the tank, headlite bucket and seat cowl will get repainted the stock green color, and I will redo the tank to stock form..

That is an option, just not an option for me. I for one cant stand when people double up banjo fittings on bikes. I think it is an easy way out, and looks poorly executed and something the owner "threw together". I have spent this much time and effort making sure the bike is tight, and I am not gonna stop now. I would like to source out a splitter from a later dual disc CB750, as those are a good looking piece..

Not too worried about the dual disc, as it is gonna be a middle/end of summer project. I am having too much fun riding the bike to have it torn apart again... ;D

No mate, not at all. I spend a fair bit of time scrounging through motorcycle wrecking yards and most of the "unfinished projects" and "Would-be street fighters" there seem to be donated by young blokes who don't give a rats ass about the historical value of those bikes, they just wanted something cheap to experiment on, then when they're not happy with the result, they cut their losses and dump it at the wrecking yard. I've got two or three of these bikes at home now, and each one has a similar story. Cheers, Terry. ;D

No need to stay quiet man, I didn't mean my response to be negative in any way (the joys of the internet)..
All I was saying is that for this project, I would rather find a nice looking splitter block then doubling up banjo fittings (thats all)..I alsways take everyones opinions/comments to heart, thus why I am on this board...

Terry, I totally understood and I am sure that may be the case a large percentage of the time.  I'm just saying it's not always the case.   ;)  As I've gotten older, I have come to appreciiate and put a lot higher value on older things.  I grew up with CB's and that is one of the main reasons I own one now, but my 'go fast' personallity has more to due with changing my bike than my lack of respect for the history.  I'm making my bike suit my personality.  To me that's what it is all about.

Your comment came off a little stereotyical and as I said, I'm sure there is a lot of truth to it... just not 'always'.  Cheers to you!   ;D

- UPDATE as of 5/17/07 -
A HUGE tanks has to go out to Mike (a.k.a MKRAMMER1121) for hooking me up with a boatload of CB550 brake parts to get my dual-disc project up and running for the project bike. Now all I really need is to get the rotors drilled, some sorta splitter/y-block and some new brake lines and I will be pullin stoppies in no time  ;D I cant wait to see how this little bike looks with dual-disc brakes up front...

Other things I need to address is to re-design the right rearset so I can actually have a working rear brake again (now I am running on front only), adjust my rear shocks to their hardest setting so I dont crack my seat anymore than I have (long story), and some other little odds and ends.

This Saturday we are taking a pretty long ride to go see the lovely ladies of the Windy City Rollers roller derby league kick some ass, so I will actually get some decent seat time on the bike (for once)...

Don't forget Mods Vs. Rockers III is less than a month away (6/16/07)..

CB/CL450 UPDATE 5/23/07

The CB450 is OFFICIALLY up for sale.
After riding my CB750 around all weekend I have made the decision that the CB450 has to find a new home. Not that I dont like the bike, it is just if I have to keep one bike as my only motorcycle, the CB750 wins hands down. I am going to clean up a few things on the scoot and put a for sale sign on it when I bring/ride it to the upcoming Mods Vs. Rockers show in Chicago. I am sure someone will snag it up there. If not, the bike will be thrown up on Craigslist , and then Evilbay. I currently have it up for sale on this site, as well as the other ones I am a member of, as I would much rather see someone who is into these bikes own it than some smuch who thinks he is a "rocker"...

When I first bought my 750, the plan was to buy it cheap (which I did) fix it up (which is mostly done) and sell it. Now that the actual thought of selling has come around again, I don't quite know if I want to do it. Wife and wallet say, "Yes." Heart says, "Hell No!"
