Author Topic: reversed the shift fork rod and engine is reassembled...take it all apart?  (Read 1701 times)

So...i messed up
I reassembled the entire engine late one night and just realized while trying to install the shifter mechanism that i reversed the rod that goes through the shift forks (pic attached)While testing the trans and shifting through the gears it didnt hit me as it shifted fine.
Now im faced with what i think are two choices...
1. Disassemble it all and flip the rod and reassemble
2. Cut the tail end of the bracket for the shifter mech (pic attached) so itll sit flush and everything else should be able to pop in place
Does anyone have an opinion on this???
Any advice is appreciated.

Ouch!
You need that hole to locate the bracket.
You MIGHT be able to flip the engine upside down, remove oil pan, and oil pump to reach holding the forks while you reverse the fork shaft. Gravity should be the only force fighting you.

I did the same mistake a few days ago. I found out when assemble the gear mechanism. But, I always check the gears before closing the upper case.
 I do not trust gear mechanism that much so I close the cases and mount the gear mechanism afterwards. I have to see how the forks works shifting all gears and neutral. One guy in another thread mounted the center fork upside down, also found out too late.

Open cases from beneath must be OK. Here a video how to close the cases that way

Thankyou for the idea of flipping it upside down and removing only the bottom case. Thatll actually be a simpler way to go about it. I dont need to spend extra time fiddling with putting back the pistons and reassembling the head...ill reply back when i get a second set of hands to help me and let you know how it goes...

Bare min i have to scrape off all the hondabond and reapply but at least i dont have to buy anything!

If anyone has any idea why this is a bad idea...please share you thoughts

I did not mean splitting the cases but you may have to. I was suggesting that you try to hold the forks through the oil pan opening. Not sure if you can reach them but beats splitting the cases if it works.

Maybe possible to pull the axis with a strong magnet, flip it and insert it and hope for hitting the forks. I checked my engine that is open with all in.

kmb69 might be right, work from oil pan side and avoid open the cases again.
It must be possible to grip the fork shaft from the oil pan side and push it out. Hope that the forks will stay so shaft can be reinserted the correct way.

You could insert the shaft correctly without any fork falling out of postion! :)

Ha ha, you guys worry too much. I did the same thing in 1983 when I rebuilt my first K1 and realised that I'd installed it backwards, so I just drilled a hole in the other end, and I rode that bike for thousands of miles. Glad to see you got it fixed properly though, without splitting the cases. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Im glad too. Im not emotionally ready to rebuild it twice before i even ride it lol
