Help identify my Honda 550 bike
« on: March 26, 2016, 01:49:48 PM »
Hi all, I am new to this forum and older bikes in general, my last bike was a 2004 Kawasaki Z750. I have acquired what I believe to be a 1977 cb550f, well atleast the engine is but the style looks more like a Honda Rebel to me.

I plan to fully restore it but I don't even know which model this is which is a good start!

I have attached a phot which I hope someone will tell me what I'm working with, also the engine reads CB550E-1135026 but can't find one on the steering head. Any input would be great, thanks!

Looks to be an F motor and frame. On the right side of the steering neck (seated) there should be a VIN tag. On the left side, there should be an engraved VIN number. If both of these are missing, you've bought a bike with a modified steering neck and need to consult your title promptly. It may be that your bike is ow registered to the motor #, not the frame, which is permissible in some states, not in others.

...exhaust and side covers too.  Tank, rear fender seat and handlebars come from another bike, I would take all those off!

Cal, he's over in England, not stateside. Don't know about title situations for bikes over there. He may have a Euro model that has been "Frankenbiked"!

As soon as you straddle a bike expect every other driver on the road to suddenly start competeing for the title "Dumbestsonofa#$%*inallNorthAmerica!!"

Firstly I apologise I posted this into the wrong forum, so if a moderator can move it to the appropriate page then thank you.
Secondly thanks for the responses so far, it is as expected, the bike is originally a F model with a few mod's. I'll have to look into the paperwork when it comes back in my name as to what is actually registered to what, especially as i definitely cannot find a VIN on the steering head.

Are you able to tell how much the steering head has been modified and if it will be a problem putting the bike into its original glory?

This is all fairly new to me so I hope my questions so far and along the way aren't too simple :o

Someone put a lot of trouble into completely mucking that poor machine up.
I guess I would start the reversal process by checking if all essential frame tabs are still present.
If it's worth doing at all it's worth over-doing.
