CB500 Starter Won't Stop Turning
« on: March 20, 2016, 05:46:09 PM »
Replaced the plastic push button starter for my 73 CB500 today since the old one was cracked.

Now, as long as the key is one, the starter spins.

I have taken it apart a couple of times and nothing is out of place to my eyes.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I had this issue before. Are you running the wires outside the bars? If so, there's likely a break in the wire's insulation and it is shorting to the bar.

How I figured this out (with the help of the forum)... if you loosen the RH switch pod's bolts, does the problem go away? You're going to have to put some shrink tube around those wires (or just replace them) and make a cutout in the switch housing to relieve some of that pressure.

Also make sure the spring for the starter button was installed correctly, and is allowing enough pressure on the button to push it off the contact.

Ended up being a short between the wire inside the hand control (yellow/red i believe) and the metal bracket that holds the switch assembly in place.

Thanks for the pointers.
