Im so sorry!! I bought a Triumph.....
« on: November 12, 2006, 04:44:52 PM »
Ok so Theres this old guy down the block from me named Peter Fisher who happens to have a buttload of old bikes. I got a few parts for my SOHC from him last year and got a glimps of a few old Triumphs and such. I was going by the other day and stopped to say hi and show him my 750 all finished......well one thing led to another and.......i had some cash in my wallet .........and welll.........Ive had this nagging thought of a bobber in the back of my mind and........so I bought a 67 TR6C.

Sorry.

My wife is just THRILLED!

Not.

But I am!

Its a basket but Im settled in and think I can pull it off. Im new to the Brit thing so any beginers hints would be great.

My wife is just THRILLED!

One more reason to tell my wife how much I appreciate her indulging me.  She just saw the '75 T160 I'm rebuilding (at the POs house, with his help) for the first time when we went to pay it off about a week ago.  She was really interested.  Probably helps that we just bought her a Shadow.   ;)

British Cycle Supply, Wolfsville, Nova Scotia.  These guys are great, and very patient with a customer who's new to this.  If the part exists, they've got it.  They ship promptly.

Old British bikes (at least mine) didn't always have high quality metal parts like Japs.  I had a carburator bowl break just from metal fatigue/age.  All told, you're in for a great time.  Enjoy!   :)

So far I have resisted the dark side although I have way too many friends that have triumphs.

Like Kghost says...you gotta make good buddies with The Prince of Darkness!!!!. Get used to oil leaks because you will have them. Shift on the right...you get used to it but might throw ya if you own a Honda at the same time. The Brit bikes are cool and are real kick ass bikes.......just different. I personally like the old Nortons but would be game to a Trump or beezer also. Enjoy ...dude!!!!!

On flight duty now, but will be home tomorrow night...I hope.  I'll check what I've saved on the computer.  Call the guys in Wolfsville when you can; they can tell you where to find out just about anything.  Their phone number is on the website.  They only do business over the phone or by mail, to ensure that you communicate clearly what you want and they can ask any probing questions needed to set you on the right path.  They're inconsistent about answering emails.

I would join the appropriate owners club, who will be able to give you details on your machine, such as date of manufacture, original colour etc.

There will be any number of modern upgrades you can make to the bike to make it 21st century reliable....electronic ignition, belt primary etc

Once you've ridden an old Brit bike you get a real appreciation for the sophistication of the Hondas! Having said that, get used to spending a lot of time talking to people who come up to you and start conversation with "I used to have one of those....."

The modern Triumphs sell very well over here.

I'd fancy the Sprint ST 1050 if I didn't have a VFR.

There was a guy at Boxhill on Sunday with a brand new Daytona 675 in black.  Obviously stolen some styling points from R1/Blade but what an awesome looking bike. And with that name on the tank...

My brother has a 675. He must have been the first in this area to get one. Its grey metallic in color and it kills my wrist from the riding position, but the thing just screams. :o

I guess you didn't read the part of the post where I said "TO EACH HIS OWN".If you like 15 grand bikes that look like Ninjas & Hurricanes go for it! All I said was I would rather spend the buck on the 70's type of street bike. So........what are you smokin'?

Easy, Mr. B

It was a joke!  ;) I don't see how these bikes look like crotch rockets though.  We ALL do have, AND are in tilted to your opinions. I think the "naked bike" have the sport bike appeal, but hold the traditional looks and feel. I bought this instead........do you like? The japs (all) of them, can't make a "naked"  aggressive looking bike to save their life. And when they do make one that is alright, they don't bring it to the States. What gives..........I know.

I did a total frame up on a '67 TR6R about in '95. I showed it several years at the Mid-Ohio Vintage Days and did very well showing it. It really is an easy bike to work on. But, buying the tools are a must, IMHO. I did almost all my tool and parts buying from British Only and have nothing but good to say about them. Of course I made them a little money as well, but when I sold the bike, I did very well also. All Triumphs need to have their cranks sludge trap cleaned out when they are tore down. The engine seems to live as long as it takes for the sludge trap to become full. Also, on the '67 only bikes, there is an oil meter system that feeds the exhaust cam. These has to be clean to be working. Many '67's have bad exhaust cams because of this problem. Mine was one of them. Yes, you can make a Triumph oil tight as well. Mine never had any oil issues at all after I rebuilt it. It was as tight as my K3. I could sit by the hour, just looking at the TR6R. I thought it was a very pretty bike.
