Wish me luck
« on: March 24, 2016, 08:39:45 AM »
I am going to get started on my 02/70 750.  She hasn't been on the road since 82 but started from time to time.  The tank is a little rusty so I figured I'd pull the tank and drain and change the oil.  Any hints from the experts would be appreciated.  I want to get her running and back on the road.

Thanks, T4

What a great looking bike man!! Congratulations, that's awesome. I have a later model 78K which I love but some day I would like to get an earlier one like this too. My favorite is the planet blue paint scheme, not sure what year they did it in. This one's pretty sweet though man.

I would go through the standard 3k tune-up process, I think there's some threads on it here. This is by far THE BEST Place to get info on these bikes and meet all sorts of great people. The guys on here have been beyond helpful with me on my first one, and even today I'm still learning new things about these.

Not sure how it runs but a clean out of the carburetors may help if it's running funky. Awesome bike man, Have fun with it. These have so much character compared to the newer bikes. Don't get me wrong, I have a modern bike too but I love my CB750 too.

Yes, definitely perform the complete 3k Mile Service. Hopefully, your carbs won't need much in the way of a rebuild, but it would be wise to flush them with good, clean gas at a minimum. Likely you'll need to clean the tubes and jets, but fingers crossed a comprehensive tune-up sees it on the road.

If there's rust in the tank, I'd use something like Evaporust or an etching compound only and test for leaks afterwards. Remove the petcock and be sure its running clear and unobstructed.

Thanks..  Just left the previous owners house, he is taking care of the title tomorrow.  I shouldn't have been so lazy over the winter.  This thing should be rideable by now.

Good looker halo, nobody has mentioned brakes and tires, but that back tire looks bald and I can only imagine what the brake fluid looks like. Check the brake hoses for cracks. Check the drive chain carefully. Don't want to be slinging a chain through that beauty.

Good Luck, a charged battery and fresh gas goes along way. If you have been starting it you know what to expect.

Really nice looking bike I wish I could get my hands on an early bike like yours!

If it has sat unturned un-run since 82 if it was mine i would be doing a 3000km's tune up and a few addittional things

1. pull the plugs add some oil to the cylinders to lube the rings and valves
2. pull a few tappet covers and dump 1 liter of oil in through the tappet holes (do some on both sides) lube that cam, rockers and cam chain also helps re-prime the scavenge side of the oil pump
3. add the other 2.5-3.0 liters to the oil tank to complete the oil change
3. with the plugs out gently turn it over to distribute the oil
4. crank it over with the plugs out for maybe 5 times of  5 second intervals. get the pump re-primed and oil flowing without the load of compression
5. Once things are well lubricated put the plugs in and start that beauty

Also if the oil coming out of it from storage is really nasty maybe consider dropping the pan for an inspection

Wow! Mind if I ask how much you got it for?

A couple of nice old rifles.

I read the plate wrong.  It was plated in 92 not 82.  The previous owner started it a few times until around 2000.  I have not started it yet.

Halo...nice score! She looks sweet. Dang that paint looks good. How is the exhaust? Don't be surprised when it starts. Mr. Honda built a good bike and with little maintenance these things run forever. If you are lucky enough to find one chances are it will start. But to get it to run like back in the day it is wise to listen to the guys here and do the 3,000 mile. Carb rebuilds are not bad. The hardest part on these KO carbs is getting the sync spot on. At least that was the hardest for me, but I am a bit anal about it :)  Good luck and keep us up to date on the progress.

Tank has been pulled dumped and petcock removed.  There was some nasty orange gas poured out of the tank and now it sits with vinegar.  How long would you leave it with the vinegar?  Where is the best place to order the petcock screen and gasket set?

Thanks, T4

Wowza, that's a sweet ride.

Mine was built in 02/70 also, but it looks... a little different now.  :)

Like twins separated at birth ;)

Your paint looks amazing!  keep it!  In fact, what you've got there appears to be an excellent condition original survivor of the first full production year of an extremely popular and culturally significant motorcyle.  I say "full production year" because these bikes were released in July 1969 so only a half year in 69.  The only thing more rare than this is the very early "sandcast" models.

You could make a small fortune parting that thing out, BUT FOR GODS SAKE DON'T DO THAT!  :o ;D

If your rifles were worth anything less than a few thousand dollars, you made out good.  Enjoy it!

As far as how long to let it sit with vinegar, that depends on how bad the rust is.  Vinegar is mildly acidic so you don't want to leave it in too long, nor do you want to let it get on that sweet sweet paint.

I'd leave it for "a while" and then rinse, and see where that got you.  Then repeat with successive "a while"s until it's clean :)
