Motorcycle knowledge..
« on: November 12, 2006, 05:47:35 PM »
I'm trying to gain as much knowledge about japaneese motorcycle and repair as I possible can.  I've tinkered with these bikes for about 15 years not really having a clue what I was doing.  Well, now I'm eager to do things the right way.  I currently have a 1978 CB750 super sport that I'm basically restoring for experience more then anything and I'm trying to gain knowledge along the way.  I'd like to locate classic restoration video's or anything I can get my hands on to further my knowledge.  I consider myself mechanically minded, but I know there are better methods that I've yet to discover.  In the future I'd like to set up a motorcycle work shop that is larger then the 200 sq ft. area, I'm currently working out of my basement..  Yip, my frame is sitting on the front porch on a nice work table that I built and everything else is in my basement.  My wife loves the paint smell...  Well, any help in regards to educational videos, books, or whatever would be appreciated..  Thanks....

Also, wheres the best site to get cafe ideas and parts?  I was once a 100% kawasaki man, but now I'm 75% kawi and 25% honda so I'm beginning to turn  ;D

I'm beginning to realize this is a good source..  I'm a new member and posted only a couple things and I've got several quick responses.  I'm also a member of the vintage jap motorcycle club, but I believe this forum is better...

Wow, now thats alot of resources.. Thanks for the help...

I hate to get off the topic, but I plan to paint my bike by myself - trial by error...  I currently have nothing..  No air compressor, paint gun - nothing..  Can anyone recommend a quality setup or a book to get started?  I painted via the rattle can, but nothing major.  So I'd also need an informational video or book?  Thanks...

The few  people I know in the vintage jap club wont even talk to you if it isnt completely stock or being restored to stock

do a few searches here on the SOHC4 forums for "rattle can" or "how to paint"... things like that.

many... i mean, MANY members here have painted their own bikes with little or no experience and lived to tell the tale (and so did their bikes)

good luck and WELCOME

Look up member "JohnK6" who has posted a good many pics on restoring basket case CB750s as well as painting tips - and he works out of a very small garage in Holland.

cheers

Welcome/
Surprised know one said go here for some ideas.
Makes Cafes for a living and has a page of other guys bikes as well "mines in there"
http://www.cb750cafe.com/

seems this site has come a long way in the past 2 years with guys cafeing their rides and getting good feedback. I've done both a stock and a cafe "sort of" ;D and always get good advice.

Use the search on the site and you will find an amazing amount of information.

I got rid of that stuff about 10 years ago..  I once owned a 1972 H2 in absolute mint condition, kick myself everyday for letting that one go but I needed the money.  I've yet to see one any nicer..  My next project bike will be a 1975 H1 or H2..

Ha, I'm sorting out an H2 dunstall cover as an overhead light for my pool table right now.
