Just installed new rims and fork on CB750
« on: May 29, 2005, 11:10:32 PM »
Hey all, I just bolted up my new from and rear three spoke rims courtesy of a FZR600.  I bolted the FZR fork on, so I could utilize the brakes, and sticky rubber!! I have a 110mm 17inch front and a 150mm 18 inch rear. as both are smaller in total diameter of the old tire and rim comstars, the bike sits a bit lower to  the ground. I'm going to try using the clip ons from the fzr first and see how it handles, if need be, I can mount some bar mounts to the top clamp, if the bike feels twitchy, this will let me drop the fork tubes an additional 2 inches to slow it down a bit.    I also added a set of mini gauges to replace the old faded units!  If anyone is interested in what is needed to convert the old girl to some modern brakes tires and wheels, gimme a shout. I'll send some pics, when my friend drops by with his digi cam!

You're using the FZR speedo? Will it need recalibration?
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!

HEY ALL, I'm getting a digi cam this weekend I hope, so sit tight, plus I'll share the details after I test ride, cuz I'm currently doing some engine work, so while the bike looks cool on new wheels/brakes/tires, its untested, and I wouldn't want to give anyone some bad advice.

Detailed, close up pictures would be great.

What about the triple clamps? Did you use the stock ones? Did you have to modify them or was it a slip in ordeal?

I believe we are  all entitled to a little more than just getting fingered. >:(

I'm sure CB750R wants to tell you everything he knows about this little modification and he knows English language SOOOOOOOOO much better than I  :D

Here's a pic of my friends CB.He wanted better brakes and a little update to the front suspension.
With this one I used the original front wheel with FZR forks, and the brakes are a combination of Kawasaki and Suzuki with a few hours of
work.

No, FZR forks are 38mm and CB's 35mm.I have used FZR triple trees in both of those bikes in the pics.
Only problem is that the front end doesn't turn as much with the FZR triple trees, cause they have less offset.
(fork tubes are closer to the gastank)
It takes a while to get use to it, but I think my bike handles so much better with these parts, that it's worth it.
If you guys could throw me with questions in Finnish, this would be lot easier  :D

Post some pictures and text of your bike(s) in "The Gallery"

So, the front end is a complete swap, triples guages, forks, wheels brakes. the bike already had a tapered roller conversion in the head, so all I did was swap the lower bearing and race from the CB onto the FZR lower triple. Top clamp, I made a plate and mounted the new gauges and stock ignition. I had to use a spacer between the upper bearing and the dust cup, or else the dust cup would bottom on the frame and not let the bearings to seat properly, I used the washer from the CB's headset.  I also had to cut off the top tab on the headstock of the frame to allow my ignition to mount up. I've lost the steering lock as a result. I had to cut down the lower fork stops on the frame to allow for adaquate steering room, carefull not to remove too much and allow the clip ons to hit the tank!! I'm going to mount LEDs into the bucket of the headlight for the idiot lights, I haven't gotten that far so no pics!.  If the steering is too steep, I'll have to mount standard handlebar clamps to the top of the triples, and slide down the fork tubes, we will see...

Rear. I have mounted the rear to the stock swingarm, It fits a 150 on a 18inch rim!!  the hub of a FZR is 20mm narrower than the comstars. so, I measured the distance from the sprocket to the swingarm to ensure I'd have proper chain line, and low and behold, with even 10mm spacers on each side the chain line is within 1mm of stock!!  The tricky part is that the comstars have 20mm axles, while the FZRs have 17mm so the spacers look like top hats, the narrow part is 15mm or so, to slide through the chain adjuster and swingarm, and is 20mm in diameter, the fat part is 10mm wide, and the large enough to but up against the stock spacers and the chain adjusters.  the rear brake, hasn't been 100% figured out, I think my master cylinder of the original honda setup is leaking, so I may make the FZR one mount up to the stock lever, we shall see.  I did use the FZRs bolts and hose, and attached to the CB's master, and bled it up and it feels ok, but like I said there's a leak so can't get a solid feel at the lever.

The chain is a 530, so I will have to run an earlier models countershaft sprocket on the 77's engine, I haven't put one on  yet, but I doubt it'll be an issue.

I have another front rim, this one was ebayed but has a flat spot, the new one is a sweet gunmetal grey, that I will probably paint the rear to match.  the rear has the edge polished its pretty sweet.

So thats one of the few projects going on with my baby.  once the engine is back in, I'm mounting a D&D can to the stock 4into1 header, to giver a little sportbike flavour and hopefully a little throatier, (previous owner bolted a stock kawi can that sounded horrible)  The 900cc kit is going to have to wait for the moment, untill the machine shop fixes that issue :-[

Sorry again about the delay, just think about how I feel, I cant ride!!!!

Replace the standard ball bearing steering head race with tapered roller bearings. This was a standard upgrade in the 70's and any old CB that hasn't had this done should have!
They are much stronger and resistant to "notching".

...so Lieno...did u make any mods to the FZR Trip. Trees, or with they drop into the stock honda neck?  Also, what year FZR did u use?

I used parts from a 1990 FZR-600 with my own bike and from a 1991 FZR-600 with my friends bike.
Notice that these are the models of those years in Finland.I've noticed that the models can be very different in USA etc.

Anyway, answer to your question, upper bearing needs a little fitting, it's inner diameter is 1mm larger than FZR's own bearing,
but the lower one dropped right in.Oh yeah and I use the CB's tapered roller bearings.

I cant understand why I didn't take any pictures back in 2003 when I last had my CB running.Damn me  >:(
I quess I was too busy making the streets dangerous  :D

Once I get my motor back together I'll take pics and put them to the gallery.

This is a FZR600 swap not a FZR1000, I think they had bigger forks and rims, this is a 3inch front wide rim, and is only supposed to take a 110mm front, however my mechanic is fitting my friends Identical rims with 120mms this week, I'll report on that when it occurs.

Thanks for the kudos, I'm really getting anxious to ride again, so hopefully I can bolt this old girl back together soon!!!

Grant.

I have the FZR swingarm in my Honda, with a GSX-750F rearwheel.

looks good with that beefy swingarm, I had a spare FZX, or Fazer swingarm, but its piviot bolt was larger diameter, and the swingarm pivot was wider than the frame, I could have machined that swingarm down to proper width, and increased the diameter of the holes in the frame, but it was easier to make the spacers for the FZR rim to match the stock swingarm than it was to do all that!!   I like seeing that people other than Harley riders can do something imaginative with thier bikes!! this site has really inspired me to make my version of a "retro rod" bringing some new school to the old school!!

I'm with you guys on running the sport bike parts with CB750's.  This is the frame I have on order now...

http://www.cycleonemanufacturing.com/imagelib/sitebuilder/misc/show_image.html?linkedwidth=actual&linkpath=http://www.cycleonemanufacturing.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/CB500.5fsbb.1ucsdt.36r.200r.ds.JPG&target=tlx_piczk7e

...I love the idea of fiitting sport bike components on a chopper frame and CB750 engine.  This frame will take all the stock CB750 components, but if I can make the sport bike gear work, then I'd love to go with that...much lighter, and I love the brakes.
