CB750 F to K
« on: February 19, 2016, 11:59:42 AM »
It all started when I Payed way to much for a non running CB750F1 in September 2013.
I can't remember why, but I was dedicated to build myself a motorcycle with a 4 in line engine.

How I bought her

Couple of hours in my possession

Chop chop

Stripped the paint of the tank and fabricated somewhat of a seat

Pulled the motor. At first the idea was to only refresh the top end.

But after some reading I decided to to do the complete engine.

After soda blast

I wasn't a big fan of the F tank. Found this K tank for 30 euros!  ;D

My first idea was to hide the oil tank under the seat. Therefore I needed seat with some room

Then it was time to seat some valves

I didn't like how the seat looked and at the time I couldn't find enough info for building myself a oil tank.
So change of plans. This is where I concluded I liked the tracker look

Bought a loop, loop didn't fit. Apparently F frames are not as wide as others?

Bought myself a cheap MIG welder second hand and made the loop fit

Time to rebuild the motor! I did everything that needed to be done. New bearings, new stretchbolts, new chains, new tensioner,...

Made some new suspension mounts

I really hate the original welds, but I don't have the skill to re-do it all. It's also not necessary, I'll get over it  :)

Got a great deal on a GSXR front end!

Top triple mod for the handlebar clamps

Deglazed the jugs

The previous front end I scored came out to be from 1998. As I wasn't sure I was going to get that to work I opted for a 2005 fork

Ordered a Cognito Moto hub & stem for the conversion

Had some modern wheels made

Front Cognito Moto hub, rear stock F1 hub. I'm pretty sure a lot of people are not going to support my tire choice  ;D

First real mock up!

The time I tried to weld aluminium with steel on a MIG wilder  :o ::)

Rear sets

Worlds most simplest brackets

As much as I like Cognito Moto's stuff, shipping and taxes are heavy. Waaaay heavy!

So I tried to fabricate my own tank

Made a couple of mistakes. Started with hot rolled steel. Cold rolled steel seems to be the standard for oil tanks.
I cannot figure out if the inside needs to be coated to prevent rust. Maybe the oil takes care of that?
I followed a fellow DDT'er his measurements. It stated a 3,2qt capacity. After building the thing it only fits 2qt's  :o
Back to the drawing table with it.

I have been reading a lot about POD filters. I know, I know..
Tried the stock filter today, I just don't like the look.

That's it for now. I'll try to update regularly! Lot's of things on my to do list!

Saw this bike near my house. Beautiful oil tank fabrication. Wish it were mine. Looks like what you are after.

I love the split tail lights in looking online for a set right now to rebuild my tail light as the turn signal is dim on mine

And I personally like pods for how open it makes it

Thanks for posting, very inspirational and after the sh1t weather we've had, makes me want to get out and do something! Well done for showing the stuff that didn't go right first time too, wouldn't want the newbies to think it's simple ;D

Got some stuff this past week so time for a update!

Ordered some fancy titanium rotor bolts:

Shoulders are to long

Fixed it with some washers. Not sure if I'm going to keep it this way. The seller couldn't give me an answer if this was safe or not.

Some goodies:

Headlight bracket fabrication:

Left some room for the acewell gauge

Rotors and calipers installed

The only switch I will be running on the handlebars. They are from a company called Motone and are smaller then the Motogadget ones.

I messed up with my previous handlebar clamps. Got some new ones, but I'm not happy with the height. They need to come down a couple of millimeters

For the coming week I'm building a bracket for the rear master cylinder

I will be only running the obligated stuff according to the laws of my country.

Lights and a horn. That's it  ;D

Got some updates:

Battery box

Seat pan

Kick stand mount

Re-did the oil tank. Ran out of co2 for my welder. Just had enough to tack everything

75€ worth of fittings  ??? ???

Spend some time on the seat. No happy with it , yet.

I also started on a custom loom. Waiting for the speedo to come in so I can finish it.
Not sure what I'm going to to with the exhaust. What you see on the picture is a mock up. I'm not even sure if it's possible this way. I have 0 knowledge of exhausts.

Really close to powder coating and upholstery!

Looking good but I would be concerned about the exhaust being so low if you are to ride on the street.
