left control wiring 78 (K8) cb750
« on: March 27, 2016, 08:50:06 PM »
Hey guys, new to the forum so forgive anything i say thats a little idiotic.... I also have pretty limited electronics experience but I'm learning as I go. I tried to search for answers on this forum but was having trouble finding answers to my questions.
So just picked up a cb750, first real bike, and first bike build. Anyways I bought new controls and levers to get rid of the grungy old broken controls that were on there. So I've got the wiring diagram from the bike and the left hand control from DCC. Anyways Im most of the way through the wiring and heres the issues I've run into:

1) the turn signals work but they don't blink (i have read that i may need to buy an electronic blinker because the resistance on aftermarket controls are too low? If anyone has suggestions here that would be great)

2) i have a TON of leftover wires. which makes me nervous. on the OEM chart it shows two wires for both the left and right turn signals but only one from the aftermarket control. also I do not know what OEM wire to attach the headlight ground and the horn ground to.

3) the two wires that were connected to the stock clutch, my understanding is that they are there so that you can't start the bike unless the clutch is pulled in...so if i disconnect them and leave them, the bike will need to be in neutral to start, and if i permanently wire them together the bike will start in any gear?

So heres how I currently have it wired (I'm not sure if the OEM wire colours have faded they don't totally match the wiring diagram):

aftermarket --         OEM

yellow         --         white
black           --
brown         --         orange
green          --         blue
brown/white --        brown/white
red              --        red/white (i think)
blue             --
pink             --        green
dark green    --        light blue
                   --        orange/white
                   --        blue/white
                   --        brown/blue
                   --        white (grey?)

vanhuette,

Looks to me like the wire connections should be as follows, based on what you've shown us.

Aftermarket       Function              OEM (per Diagram)
Yellow               Low Beam            White
Black                Horn Ground         Find a Frame Ground (use a Green Wire to conform to Honda Color Code)
Brown               Left Turn              Orange
Green               High Beam            Blue
Brown White     T/S Main Wire        Grey (From Turn Signal Flasher - assume T/S means Turn Signal :)  )
Red                  H/L Main Wire        Red/Yellow
Blue                 Hi Beam LED Grd   Not Needed
Pink                 Horn Main Wire      Light Green
Dark Green       Right Turn Signal   Light Blue

What I would do is to get a few jumper clip wires and connect one function at a time and verify the connections work ONE AT A TIME.  :)

Hope this helps, at least a bit.

Hey Charlie, thanks for the reply. Ill try switching over the brown/white wire and see if that fixes the turn signal flashing. I was partly using the diagram and partly just using trial and error for each connection until it did what i wanted it to do hahaha.

Is it safe to say that the remaining OEM wires are not important? i can just get rid of them?

vanhuette,

I would not get rid of any remaining unconnected OEM Wires.  Just tape them up.
At some point, there may be a need or desire to return to original stock condition.
Then it would be a problem.

Hey Charlie, yup thats a good point. By the way changed the wires and you were totally right, turn signals are blinking now.
