My first bike... 1982 CB650SC
« on: March 29, 2016, 09:38:28 AM »
So some friends and I decided we wanted to get into motorcycles, so we've all bought a couple of old bikes. 79 harley, '82 honda CB650, some other suzuki and now a yamaha XS750. Well anyways I'm the one who picked up the honda and I'm super excited to start working. I thought I'd look around here for tips, tricks, guides, etc.

The story is I found this bike on craigslist 25 minutes from where I live. The lady who owned it bought it as a project but decided she didnt have enough time or motivation to get it running. I talked the price down to around $500 and took her home, where I was able to get the motor running after about 10 minutes of charging and a bang with a hammer on the starter and carbs. She likes to die at a low idle but I'm fairly certain the problem is a poor connection in the battery, which is brand new.

She has a little bit of rust spotting on the paint and chrome but overall she is a BEAUTY.

Right now, my goal is to get it mechanically sound so I can pass NY state safety inspection and ride it all summer, and after that, who knows! Right now this bike is pretty much completely stock, circa 1982, so it definitely needs some TLC to be the great bike it was meant to be.

My to do list right now:
Carb rebuild
Chain, tires
electrical work - new turn signal relays, starter, tidy up wiring and new rubber seals
brakes - theyre all seized up but the fluid looks good. I probably need to clean the piston and likely replace the seal
seat work & retaining bolts

Lastly, whoever rode it last cut a hold in the pipes to bypass the mufflers and make it louder. It sounds pretty sexy but unfortunately I'll probably have to fix this for inspection :/

Thanks for hosting such a  great forum, I look forward to working on the bike and giving updates!
