Number One Cylinder Running Hot
« on: March 31, 2016, 03:34:30 PM »
I just installed a MAC 4-1 exhaust on my 550. The install went well although 5 or 6 more (very small) hands would have been a big help. The carb jets---per the advice of many---were not changed.

The bike was running fine before the install and still runs fine, but after only a few minutes of static running the header pipe on number one cylinder is a very dark blue while 2,3, and 4 are still gold-to-bluish. The total running time was about 10 minutes---3 warm-ups of about 2-3 minutes each. Cool down in between.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

what are your resistance measurements for all your plug caps?

Thanks for getting back. I've been trying to get a resistance reading per Hondaman's post --- http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=67096.0 , but I'm not able to get ANY reading---on any of the plug caps, so i'm assuming my multimeter is dead. I'm going to see if I can dig one up locally.

Set to read ohms?(20K)
Touch the electrodes together.  Anything?

Funny thing. I had an old cap and I tested it. The multi works. Got repeatable readings of 8.37 (which seems reasonable). But still nada with the caps currently on the bike. I get a consistent "1" reading with those. The caps on the bike are Nichiwa VD05F---anything odd about them?

Anyway, I'm ordering a new set of the NKG caps recommended by Hondaman. It's under $20 for the set and I won't have to worry about THOSE for a while.

Do you have time to explain to me what the plug caps have to do with the problem. I was expecting that the problem was either too rich or too lean a mixture---which I can kind of understand. I can't quite figure out how the plug caps could cause overheating.

if it get a 1..you are aut of Scala,on the instrument..or have a total short..
..often meters have more scales for ohm readings..turn one klick on the meter and get the heiger/or lower value for messure

Too much resistance in cap = inadequate/no spark = incomplete burn
8.37 ohms is too high.  All your new caps should read at or below 5k ohms.

as strynboen says...go to the next higher ohm setting on your meter and retest.

With the old cap from my odd-parts bin, I get the 8.37 reading with the meter set to 20K---but with the caps currently on the bike, I can only get "1"s no matter what the meter setting is (including obviously the 20K setting).

if you put the terminals(vires)together..is it giving 0,1-0,3 ohm..that is normal..thats the lovest ohm reading the meter can give.( near a short).the heigest ohm is( kilo ohm k- ohm) ..almost nothing komes through.(. this is on elektronic digital meters)
