1976 CB400f to repaint or not?
« on: March 31, 2016, 06:48:08 AM »
I have a mostly original 400f that I have been cleaning up.

The tank has a few small nicks, the clear coat is peeling and a little over spray from a previous owners house painting affect the paint.  The warning decal is peeling off.

Still, it has a certain original patina that I like.  What is your opinion of the pros and cons or repainting with repro decals?

Thanks.

Depends,  but I'd lean towards as is unless I was going for a restoration, especially if the bike was a rider.  Post some photos of it once you get enough posts. Welcome...Larry

Leave it.  It's only original once.  I would much rather see a slightly scruffy original than a tarted up, repainted, over-polished trailer queen.
If it works good, it looks good...

There is a fine line between the look of patina and neglect.

If it has natural age, then leave it.  If damaged, repaint.

do what you can to buff off the overspray, and leave it.

If you can live with it the way it is then leave it.

Leave it if possible. If you decide you need to repaint, check out the decal supply situation before starting- it is hard to find 400f ones for sale where the colours are actually correct.

If you paint the tank it'll likely stand out like a sore thumb and make the rest of the bike look rough, then you won't be happy until everything's minty. Been there, done that. Mirror polished a footrest hanger on a Commando once and ended up doing a restoration that was never intended  ::). Better off to just ride and enjoy.
