Did I scrap my rear bearing?
« on: April 02, 2016, 12:28:58 PM »
Hey guys,

I was installing the rear bearings on my 550 and I slipped and hit the side of the bearing. Did I screw the bearing? Picture attached, dent is at the bottom.

Realistically, probably not, imho.
However, I did the same thing once, only a little bit worse, and my paranoia made me replace the bearing just the same.

If you choose to replace it, check around town for a bearing or related store.
It's a pretty common bearing and you can buy just the one you need.

That's just a seal, probably fine, but if you're replacing the retainer ring and staking them again, maybe cheaper to get another bearing, since those rings seem to cost a fortune.

I changed my front bearings a few days ago. I replaced one of the new bearings for less.
I had suspicions about hammer on the inner race when I used the old bearing between my big nylon hammer and the bearing that needed to be pounded hard to seat. It was only half way in and bearing cost not much so the decision was easy. I used a short pipe and punched the outer race only.
If the inner race can be rotated with an even feeling without "sand" inside it might be OK. You can make another check at next tire change.

Hydraulic press must be much better without heavy acceleration of the outer race causing internal damage when the balls and inner race follow the bangs on the outer race hammered upon. A press can be found for not much on eBay. But will be used too little in my small garage.

Do not lock the retainer too good. I did that back in the 80's, real PITA to remove it next time 2013. I had to cut it in pieces, threads were damage too due to the heavy punches that needed to be drilled clean. Hub like a Swiss cheese. I did not lock it this time when I cannot see how the retainer can move when it sit in constant press from both sides when wheel is bolted.

Thanks PeWe, that actually answered my next question, was wondering about the retainer, I imagine it's just a safety net anyway as the bearing is unlikely to just fall out.
I popped the shield off the bearing and straightened it out, everything looked fine inside and it spins smooth so I put it back in. I'll make sure to check it like you said, but I don't see any issues.
