Haven't had a chance to get a lot done as I finally got sick of the old carpet and put down floating bamboo floors. The lounge is still the old carpet so I can polish alloy bike parits while I watch television. I have however managed to accumulate of lot of the bits I needed. I had a go at using fibreglass for the first time, to extend the Dick Mann seat and fill in the oil tank gap. Reasonably happy with how it turned out, so will get it covered in the next few weeks. Also had a few of the ratty looking spacers turned out of stainless.

Bike is off to the local custom shop on Monday to get the fairing bracket welded on. LED turn signals are on their way from Revival, so I can make the harness once they arrive. I ordered a tail light from After Hours Choppers, but the owner Gabe appears to unfortunately be MIA. Will hopefully have my Kott splash guard soon as well. Also have a 900SS dash coming and plan to cut out the centre and using my new-found fibreglass skills fill it in to take the single motogadget tacho and an aircraft style kill switch. I saw an old racing MG on Silodrome that had a very nice crinkle finish dash, so will give that a go. Once the frame is back I plan to send the swingarm to Honda Man to work his magic. Will then paint the frame and hopefully have a finished rolling chassis. Sounds easy writing it down.

A member who isn't around on the forums any more has that fairing on his hybrid 650/550 powered & 550/750 powered bike.  I think it made BikeEXIF years ago.  If you search for Paulages you can find some of his threads and a picture of his bike...
Having the lines for the seat and fairing right make it flow very well... The opening for the handlebars and the lower edge of the fairing work together, but I'm probably preaching to the choir.

Looks really nice!
Are you going full lowers too?  I don't recall if you said so or not...

The motor in that 650/550 was quite a marvel.

Been a while since I posted. No, not going full lowers, just staying with the 900SS fairing. I don't think lowers would work with this fairing anyway.

Just got the bike back from Mark at Monel Custom Automotive who did a heap of welding and fabrication I knew I couldn't do myself. In no particular order, have achieved the following since the last post:

The fairing mount has been cut and shortened slightly and the angle adjusted. Mark also made up some upper and lower brackets for the fairing and bent the kickstarter so it clears the rearsets.

LED indicators arrived from Revival. Not sure if I will run them in each of the outer fairing bolt positions at the front, or even run them at all, the bike is old enough I don't have to.

Have all the extra Motogadget stuff I need to do the electrics on its way, so will start the wiring this week. Just need to make up a dash to house the tacho.

Micro-switch has been attached to the rear brake lever bracket to actuate the brake lights.

The splash guard from Dustin Kott arrived and is in place. Very grateful to a bunch of guys on the main sohc forum who said to give him a call. He was great to deal with.

Also got the rear light from Gabe at After Hours Choppers, think it will be really different.

Replaced all the pitted old front and rear wheel spacers with stainless, machined by the retired gent I was put in touch with.

Just bought a CB650 cam off ebay to start the engine parts acquisition.

Kind of scary how much these projects cost. Still cheaper than my ex-wife, and a hell of a lot more fun.

Cheers

The reason Divorce (and motorcycle builds) cost so much is their worth it. Word.

I've been married all my life because I'm too cheap to pay for a divorce and I need all I can squirrel away to build bikes. You are lucky!  ;D

Thanks gents, much appreciated. I have seen aluminium fairings, I think there is someone in the UK that does them. The tank is from Tab II Classics, also in the UK. They might be able to do you a fairing as well.

Great looking bike! Love the fairing.

Can you tell me how you routed your front brake hose to manage the fairing mount?

This is coming together nicely.  The tank and fairing lines work well together.

Darren - I haven't routed the brake lines yet unfortunately. There is a mounting tab on the Ducati bracket, so was thinking of bringing the two separate lines together there and then running the single line up to the master cylinder. It's basically a bevel 750SS/900SS front end configuration so will check out how they did it originally. The twin caliper setup makes wheel removal extremely difficult so I took them off. Don't have a tow bar, so I pull the front end and wheel of and slide her in the back of my Corolla hatch to get it to the shop. Get some very strange looks as I drive through town. Will post pics up once I have the lines sorted.

I got a few of them from an ebay seller called 'inhelume', from the UK I think. They are IP67 rated (waterproof) and can be set up to switch the lights when the switch is pressed or released (single pole double throw or SPDT). The black bracket is from Cognito. We have put the blade from the switch through one of the spare holes on the bracket. It is set up to provide power when the switch opens. There are two small holes in the switch block so you can drill and tap the mounting bracket. Just using double sided tape until I get the wiring done and I'm happy it works.

If you are in the US you shouldn't have too much problem finding one. AUS is kind of the third world for a lot of things like this.

If you don't have one local, and think you could use one, PM me your address and I'll put one of my spares in the mail. Have had people do me favours so far, so happy to pass it forward.

After playing around with a 900SS dash and fibreglass to try and housed the Motogadget speedo I gave up and took it to the machinist I use. He came up with a very simple alloy bracket to go on the fairing brace.

Also got sick of not having a bike to ride since my divorce so bought a big brother for the CB550. The CBR1100XX is brilliant. Had Ducati's, Harleys and Triumph in the past, never a big bore Jap bike. Has put the project back a bit, but well worth it.

Turns out the Reg/Rec won't fit easily in the tank tunnel. Anyone see any issues with sitting it in the tray under the seat, next to the m-unit (as per image)? Will post the question to the main forum as well.

Got distracted by a beautiful lady, a real one, not the Blackbird. I have finally managed to get the frame smoothed and powder coated by a local business here in Canberra called Capital Powder Coating. Extremely happy with the job and service. Will bolt everything up over the next week. Need to upholster the seat and paint fairing after I cut the headlight hole a bit wider to fit the rubber trim. Few other minor things and then get to the engine rebuild. The lower shock bolt go through spools, so I need to get a nice track stand that will look okay in the lounge room.

For the fairing I want a bright color that pops to contrast the satin black. Would flames get me a stoning?
