Best option/bang for the buck cb550 clutch
« on: March 06, 2016, 10:26:45 PM »
The clutch on my recent 550 project is slipping with the adjustment tightened all the way. Any opinions on clutches best bang for the buck/places to buy. All i have found is ebc and barnett.

"tightened all the way" may be the problem. You need free play both with the clutch adjustment and the cable.

1st) Loosen all cable adjustment. 2nd)loosen the 6mm nut on the clutch cover, gently seat the screw then back off 1/4 turn.

Adjust the cable with some free play at the lever.

Honda parts are available.

Get it right the first time: genuine Honda parts.

The adjuster screw never finds any resistance till it hits a dead stop. The shop manual says to turn in until a slight resistance is felt the back off quarter turn.

This clutch adjustment always seems to be up for interpretation.

So loose the adjuster at the lever and clutch actuator arm on the case.

Loosen the 6mm nut, back out the adjuster screw, gently seat the screw until a slight resistance is felt, then back off 1/4 turn.

Then adjust the clutch arm and lever for 1/8th to 1/4" free play.

That's it???

I'll give it a try. With WOT spirited acceleration I'm get'n a bit of slip before grip from my clutch.

The adjuster screw in the clutch cover is screwed into an internal actuator arm but not into the cover - the cover is not threaded it merely passes through it (and has a shoulder inside to tighten the M6 locknut against). So turning the screw clockwise LOOSENS the adjustment bringing the arm further away from the push rod and turning anticlockwise tightens the adjustment pushing the arm in closer to the pushrod. The internal end of the screw is peened so the screw can't be accidentally screwed right out of the arm. Mine is screwed anticlockwise (tightened) as far as it can go which in my case still leaves some free play.

I recently fixed my slipping clutch with secondhand friction discs because I couldn't find any genuine clutch discs and the after market sets don't come with the one different disc for the top one.

yes, try first with adjusting. tightening it anti-clockwise is unintuitive and maybe that's all that needs to be done.
otherwise, it may be time for a new set of plates, discs and springs. get OEM honda parts as everyone else has said.
