There are doors you can close in 10 to restrict some of the prying Microsoft is wont to do. But if you are really worried about prying eyes and you use any type of technology that accesses the internet you have already lost the game. They won.

I installed 10 on my tablet and computer that had 8.0 and 8.1 and save a few inconveniences it works fine.

 Guess I will be the first one to admit it but anybody left on Earth still running XP like me    My Old Man used to say if it ain't broke don't fix it.  Crap - old bikes, cars,house full of antiques and ancient operating system.  I need a major life upgrade

If you use that computer to access the internet you are putting yourself at risk since they don't provide any service for it at all. (But, you know that already 
If you use it as an offline computer then hack away. I still think XP was one of their best OS which of course isn't saying a whole lot.

Thank you for your thoughts. I think(yes I know it's dangerous) the windows 7 will stay, as Retro said, support will remain long enough to see out this puter, then I can see what is around then.

Still with XP SP3 here on this desktop and our old laptop too.  Wiki says it is still running on almost 8% of PCs as of January 2016, so we are not alone.  Both of our computers are not compatible with Win 7 according to Microsoft, even though this desktop has a 3 gig Pentium 4, 2.5 gigs of DDR400 ram, hyper-threading technology, blah blah blah, all of the hot #$%* stuff from 10 years ago.  As ancient as it is, it still runs in a pretty snappy manner.  As for vulnerabilities, it is like sex, if you take some care where you dip your virtual wick, the risk is low, especially if you don't use IE and have a decent antivirus program.  I am getting by with the free version of Avast these days.

Erik I am sure king Hubetubee has went back on his deal and used the proceeds to buy a bunch of 40 year old small displacement Honada.  That is all you seem to see in those war zones as they are so easy to keep running.

XP is the last bastion for those of us who MUST us Microsoft's [I can't say the words bad enough here to describe their crap] OSes. In the world of industrial automation where I have worked for over 30 years, the major PLC (i.e., computers that run machines) manufacturers got in bed with Microsoft during Win2K, only to become unbelievably locked-in, grabbed by their throats, crammed into a very small box, and otherwise raped and abused by the decision, while the "minor" PLC makers have now come to dominate the entire world's PLC marketplace by making software that runs on everything. Oh, and it also runs on Microsoft's products by SUSPENDING WINDOWS when you boot it, so that the computer becomes stable enough to prevent it from making the machinery do dangerous things while you're plugged into it, because Windows got so constipated it finally crapped all over your program and made the machine go out of control....

You could not be more wrong about this "product" being a decent AV. I could fill your inbox with GBs of files that will fly right by it.

I don't doubt it has vulnerabilities (it is free), or with about any of the others.  I used to pay money for Norton and McAfee and picked up some viruses in the past anyway, plus the AV programs slowed the machine down to an annoying degree.  Got anything you'd recommend these days?

My advice is to upgrade.  The day will come when your machine will fail, and a replacement will have the latest OS.  And unless you keep up with the latest and greatest, you will be lost when you think the new is "just like the old".  Think of keeping up as baby steps.  Easier, and less frustrating.

Cylance Protect. It uses Machine Learning Algorithms only and ever consumes a maximum of 4% CPU when evaluating bulk files. It works only upon the attempt to execute a file, not persistent disk scanning. Unlike "signature" based AVs, Cylance uses math to distinguish between known good or known bad based upon 16 Million features of any given file. Signatures are written specifically for specific exploits. Transform or mutate a hash table, and the signature is defeated. Simple as that.

Most every "attack" is based upon known exploits in OS, or applications. Simply because an application has a vulnerability doesn't mean you are vulnerable. You may not run that application or have the environment suitable for the exploit. So AV vendors spend inordinate amounts of time writing signatures that no one ever depends upon. And signatures are written by humans, who are themselves fallible. MLAs are math-based and inherently far more accurate and faster (after all, a computer is a math machine). So let the computer do what its best at, computing and the human what they're best at, using a computer.

I'm not sure what you think of Kaspersky's offerings Cal, but I have been using KIS for years now and never had any problems what so ever, You can't physically open a website, email or anything  thats infected, and it automatically does virtual sign ins on everything now, best anti virus I've used by far, McAfee is #$%* and once on your system its a real pain to get rid off, I think someone now has made a program specifically to remove McAFee , I'm not too sure about Norton now but it used to be almost useless...

A a couple old shifter covers and an oil pan from a cb750 seems to provide adequate shielding from those guys.

I had read rumors that microsoft had plans to update computers to win10 whether you the user chose to or not through their automatic updates but thought that was just hype, never thought they would actually do it. I guess if you don't have a problem with 10 then all is cool but I also imagine you can go back to 8.1 if you wanted as well.

Well, I did hit the agree button, but I thought it was part of a normal update as I have automatic updates. (even though I don't remember having to do that before on the pc)

You have 30 days to decide if you want to keep it or go back.

 If you go back, the GWX Control Panel works well and is easy to use.

 Give it a week to see if you like it. It might be a really nice system.

Most of the "spyware" stuff can be turned off. Just remember, it's 2016, everything is spying on you.
