750 4 engine in a 500 frame?
« on: November 13, 2006, 03:56:05 PM »
Just a question from idle curiosity.

Has anyone in here ever tried to or sucseeded in transplanting a CB750/4 engine into the frame of a CB500/4?

It seems that if someone was going to try and get more beef out of his 500, it would be just as easy to do that rather than invest in a big bore kit. Either way, you'd be looking at some extra work. Is the weight of the larger engine substantially greater?

Thanks (please pardon such ignorant questions from this newbie!)

Never tried, but seriously doubt it's possible, as the 750 motor is practically shoehorned into the frame it was designed for!

The 500/550 motor is narrower than the 750, and thus the frame is narrower, and the frame mounts for the engine.

Based on my measurements you would have to do enough frame modifications to get it to fit that you might as well build a new frame for the 750 motor.

Here's a related question: Has anyone ever gotten two SOHC 4 CB500 engines in a single frame?? Saw off the 1st trans; chain (or gear) the engines together; and run it??

I know it's been done with older (pre-unit) BSA's and Triumphs, and just about any Norton...but a Honda SOHC Eight...Wow...   :o ;D :D
...stock 1972 CB500 '500 Four' undergoing re-assembly...

I have seen cb engines with the trans sawed off for other applications where a pripary was used with another trans.

If one had access to a machine shop, theoritically you could build a v-8 block (using a shared crank, maybe even v shaped con rods). theoritcally bothe banks of cylinders would have to have their own igniton and valve timing. Allen Milyard and Simon Whitlock in england have managed to turn 3 cylinder kawasaki two strokes into 4, 5, and even 48 cylinder engines. Ideally they use two strokes because they don't have to mess with cams. What is nice about their creations is that they fit in the frames and look stock, where as you could not do that with 2 cb engines or a v-8 engine.

Not that the cb750 frame is that great and all, but I would like to someday see someone put a cbr 1000 engine in a k0 frame. I have seen fzr600 engines in a lot of older super bikes (including a kawasaki h1) why not one of these new modern marvels. On second though a cbr600 motor would be fine and you could run the F3 wheels.

In answer to the first question:-
not without a gasaxe and welder PLUS the brakes and suspension wouldnt be up to it.
Second question I have seen a Yamaha 500 four 2 stroke but i dont think it is feasable to make a 1,000cc 8 cylinder
