Baking the case after painting
« on: April 06, 2016, 08:30:48 AM »
Hi Everyone,

I've got my 1975 CB750 engine case out and in pieces. I'm planing to rattle can paint the case halves soon. I've got my aircraft remover and numerous cleaning brushs ready. Everything is off the top and lower case halves except for the studs and the counter shaft bearing that is pressed into the case. My question is, should I remove the studs and the counter shaft bearing when the time comes to bake the case halves in the oven or will the studs and bearing do fine in the oven while the paint is curing?

Thanks for any info. This is my first motorcycle ever. I bought it last year on a whim and took a motorcycle driving class at the local junior college to get my license. I drove it 3 months and it began too leak oil from the fins. I found this forum when doing my research to eliminate the leak and was inspired to do a complete bike rebuild. It's been about 3 months now and I'm enjoying every minute of it! I've never done anything like this before and really have no idea what I'm doing but I'm excited and optimistic that things will work out just fine.

Thanks again for any advise that will help move my project forward!!

If it were me, I would at least remove the bearing anyway and replace with a new one, since it's cheap and easy insurance at this point. You should only need to bake at like 200 if I'm not mistaken, so you would be fine to leave the studs in. Another option you have is to paint the cases after reassembly and cure by running the motor (that's what I did) good luck with it!

Thanks for the advice!! I put in an order for a new replacement bearing and that's exactly what I'm going to do.  :D
