1976 CB400f Without Kick Start?
« on: April 18, 2016, 08:37:55 PM »
Hey there, Just bought a 400/4 and Im curious to know if some of these bikes came without a kick start? Mine doesn't have one, and I cant find a shaft. Only what looks to be a hole where it may have been and a plug that sits pretty flush. I find it hard to believe someone would delete it but I thought Id check. Thanks!

Someone deleted it - the spring probably broke!

So would there be a shaft in behind this plug? I figured it would stick out a bit. Unless someone cracked open the case to take out the whole shaft.

I think someone must have taken the clutch cover off and removed it all (shaft, cog and spring).

The shaft and spring will come out very easy once the clutch cover is removed.
It was a common mod to remove the kick start assy to either save weight or as a less expensive option than repairing a broken kick start return spring or the knuckle for the kick start arm.

Less expensive then, and just about your only option now. Both parts are NLA, unless ebay comes up with them you're out of luck. I have searched through crates of lever at several bike wreckers and haven't found one, or any other that will work.
