CB550 Rear Wheel Bearing Retainer Removal
« on: April 10, 2016, 09:45:41 AM »
Hello Folks

I need to remove the bearings in the rear wheel of my 1975 CB550 F1 but I am struggling to undo the bearing retainer.
I have read that these may be "staked" but I cannot see any punch marks through the four holes in the retainer . Also that these may be a right or left hand thread depending on year.
Does anyone have any tips that may help please ?? I have made a Heath Robinson tool that should work , soaked the retainer in releasing oil and tried gentle heating of the hub but no joy.

Thanks .......Keith

Do you have the shop manual yet?

Yeah, it may be reverse threaded. I'm sure some 500 owner will chime in shortly.

The staking is not in the pin wrench holes. There should be punch mark dimples right in the thread gap, you just drill these down about 3/16" with roughly a 3/16" drill bit. On re-assembly, restake the retainer in two new places with a centre punch. You don't need to go mental with the staking. I've also drilled and tapped a #8 screw through the threads and loctited in a SS Allen set screw. Bearing widths are close tolerance but the retainer may not tighten with the stakes matching up again.

I'm pretty sure they are reverse threaded...

I used a decent sized flat headed punch and a hammer.  Put the punch in one of the four holes at an angle and a few sharp blows in the direction you want to move it and it should start to give

IF any of them are regular right hand thread it could be 77-78, but 500 and early (74-76) 550 wheels I've done were reverse threaded. To get it out take a good piece of flat bar and drill two holes in it the distance from one hole to another in the bearing retainer, then thread a nut and bolt through both holes and use the bolts into the bearing retainer as a wrench.

If you want to save the retainer, I'd recommend buying the correct tool for the job: http://www.davidsilverspares.com/CB550F1-SUPER-SPORT-1976/part_237043/

a hammer and punch will damage the holes and reduce the number of times you will be able to remove and reinstall the retainer.

Does that one fit the 500/550s? It doesn't say that it does

I just made a perfectly good tool for that - used flat steel strip 1/8' thick 1" wide that was laying around and drilled two holes just small enough hold (interference fit) two 3/16ths drill bits to stick out 1/8".  That was for a CB750K4 so just check what size bits you would need. Took 5-10 minutes to make - worked great.

i built my own,  (im not a rich guy like bagger  ::)  ;D ) the spacing from the center of each punch is ~39mm / ~1.56in... mine was reverse threaded....

dont mind my crap welding though, the weld held.

The only mistake i made was not to remove the punch marks out with a drill, so i ended up ruining some of the smaller threads, this was resolved by using a matching pitch tap, and rolling it on the bearing till it took out the messed up sections..... :'(

Thanks for the advice so far. Bit busy at the moment so won't be able to get in the garage till next week.
Think I will have a crack at making a tool as described as what I made was a quick effort involving two bolts and a length of 4 by 2 wood. Just call me tight !!. Will update on how it goes.
One question . What is PB blaster ??

Ta .......Keith

I am also poor. My homemade tool looks very similar to yours except that I welded an old socket to it for easier use.

Does anyone know if the retainer nuts on the 550s are the same size as the 750s on the early 70s models
