Starter clutch spring specs
« on: April 12, 2016, 06:32:42 PM »
Does anyone have the specs that go with Honda's starter clutch springs?

Need to replace the ones in my Nighthawk and I can't find any guidance as to what they're supposed to be.

I've measured them of course, but spring rate is totally beyond me - and it matters

They are all soft. Just source a new set. Would be nice if they cross referenced with the 750's??

It does cross-reference.  Spring hasn't changed since the later model SOHC 750's and is still valid for all the 80's models.

The Nighthawk is a special breed.  The starter clutch for it was valid for 3 years only, and it wasn't rebuildable.  I actually had to drill out the pins they used to secure the cover.  But inside it was the same old crummy design that has been around forever.

I'm looking for springs that are bit better than what Honda's selling because I really don't want to crack the crankcase again.

Well I put in an order for a couple options.  If they don't pan out I can fall back and order OEM from Powersedge for the CB650.

Is the starter gear similar to the 750? I replaced the rollers, springs and caps. The roller surface on the gear was really bad, unround, so I found a better one and used that also. It seems to work great now. No more slipping out or not catching.
