You sure you didnt put beans in the oil?   ::)
Clean it up and see what lies underneath  :o
you might need to replace it with the rear sprocket, and get a new chain (non o-ring)

The sprocket gas some play to it, im delivery going to replace. Is there a seal for the shaft that could be bad? Or do you think it's just road grime and oil from the chain? Realized I definitely need a gasket kit. Contemplating a whole rebuild. For someone with decent mechanical skill and a manual, is a full on rebuild a pain? Also realized I need a new screw kit, anyone have experience with the Allen head kits?

looks like years of chain lube booger.  clean it with kerosene.
allen kits are frequently used.  quite a few vendors on ebay.

No telling where all that oil is coming from until you clean it up. What a mess.

Keep Calm and Carry on Scrubbing!  ;D   Mind the wiring!

I'm doing the same thing to my XS650 engine today. Just finished first pass. Took about two hours.
Stiff skinny nylon brushes, brass brushes, scotch bright, engine degreaser, orange degreaser, tooth brush, garden hose all engaged!

It takes like a week to get that kerosene taste out of my toothbrush... :o

I bought every brush I could find! Gunk degreaser does not work that good from my experience so far.  Does anyone have a stator cover that's in good shape. Mine is badly scraped up.
