I don't see them either.

Think the original image in my google photos account might be too big for taptalk, or not formatted correctly or something.  I resized one and it's showing up now on taptalk for me.  None of the rest of them though.  Maybe caching, I'll take a poke around when I'm at work today.

They're showing up fine on the sohc web forum for me though.

Been a busy couple of weeks, not much time to work on the bike, but here's what I got.

So I got the power side of the M-Unit wired up and cables roughly run.  I decided to just get a small piece of alu to bolt components to, and I'll just velcro that to the seat pan.  I was pretty averse to drilling through the seat pan to mount things (save for the taillight wires/mounting bracket).

Here's the M-Unit and starter solenoid

For the solenoid mount I just cut a thin piece of alu, and bent ears on it.  I pop riveted it to the alu plate, and those ears fit perfectly in the stock rubber mount from the stock solenoid.

I'm going to give the Ricks the same alu plate treatment.  There was room to mount it next to the M-Unit, but I thought it might get too hot and there would be the possibility of damaging the M-Unit, or melting wires, so I'm going to mount it in the far back little seat cavity.

Here's a panoramo of the wiring up the bike.  Blue wire is the start wire hanging down, and it's hard to see but I'm going to mount the wireless ignition right in front of the battery in the little ear of the battery tray.

Here's all the wires pulled up and through the headlight bucket.

Next up I think is going to be starting to run all the front control wiring through the bars.  I'm going to install control switches that I got from Lowbrow customs and they'll be flush mounted to the bars.  I'm also planning on running clutch/brake switch lines through the handlebars and probably have them exit down by the top triple nut.  Hoping for a pretty clean front end wiring wise.

Another little project that I'm going to tackle here in the next week or two is building a bucket for the GPS speedo/digital tach.  The unit I got is from Speedhut, and they're designed for cars.  I've seen several projects use them and they have kind of a cheezy spin on plastic nut.  Most projects I've see just cut out a plate and spin the nut on the back.  I'm not really into that so I found a perfectly sized piece of pipe at my local metal supermarket that the speedo will more or less drop into.

I've got a small piece of flat cold rolled steel to weld onto the back to seal the back off, and a thicker chunk of steel to make a mount for this spot on the triple that I think was used for a wiring mount.

So yeah, I'm going to get everything roughly mounted in the next little bit before I start cutting and soldering wires, and really wiring the thing up in earnest.

I'm wondering/debating if I should splice the original starter motor wire to make it longer, or replace it completely as it's not long enough now to reach up to the starter solenoid in it's new placement.  I guess that starter isn't too difficult to pull out and put a new wire on, just a matter of another trip to the hardware store, and time to pull the thing out and build a new wire.

Anyway, probably going to pull the plug on new shocks (still debating on budget, and how much performance I need) shortly as I'm hoping my newly hondaman'd swingarm will be back from Colorado soon.  Also getting rubber mounted on the wheels in the next week or so, so I'll have that all mounted up soon too.

Things are getting dangerously close, or at least it feels that way from way back when I started this whole project.

Ok, more as soon as I have time!  As always, it's my first build, so feel free to point out where I'm #$%*ing up, or if you have any advice that you're willing to share on parts, placement, etc., to help a brother out!

Cheers all!

Some of your pictures went missing again?

Be sure to clean that solenoid stud really, really well! You can run the Y/R wire from the solenoid directly to START ouput, and the Gr/R wire straight to ground and be all done with that portion, unless you are determined to use the left side Clutch Safety switch wiring?

Regarding the speedo cup, how will yu secure the unit to the cup now that y arent using their threaded receiver? Its also advisable to isolate thwt unit with a small rubber bushing instead of a hard mount only. The vibration is a bit hard on them in the long run.

Reg/Rec - consider mounting it on the underside of the seat pan where it will be in free-flowing air. Its probably fine where you plan it, but open air is far better.

M-Lock - test it for reading throughh yur seat before you install it as you plan. Ive installed them from the underside in a similar location without incident. Youll probably need slightly longer screws too, I think M3 is the gauge...

Dammit!  Think I fixed that now.  Sloppy cutting and pasting.

Be sure to clean that solenoid stud really, really well! You can run the Y/R wire from the solenoid directly to START ouput, and the Gr/R wire straight to ground and be all done with that portion, unless you are determined to use the left side Clutch Safety switch wiring?

Ya, just a test fit on there for now, I got to scrub the #$%*e out the terminals.  I was thinking about wiring up the clutch switch safety wiring.  If I ever sell this thing, or let any buddies ride it, I'd rather just be safe than sorry having it wired up.  I'm becoming a wus as I get older, I took all that crap off my first bike years ago.  IDK, doesn't seem like too much of a pain in the ass.  Any reason I shouldn't other than the complexity of the wiring?

Regarding the speedo cup, how will yu secure the unit to the cup now that y arent using their threaded receiver? Its also advisable to isolate thwt unit with a small rubber bushing instead of a hard mount only. The vibration is a bit hard on them in the long run.

Still working on that.  The fit is a very tight press fit right now, so I was thinking of just turning the threads down a bit and wrapping a small bit of rubber around the gauge before sliding it in, hoping to still keep it a tight press fit.  I was also planning on getting a large o-ring to slide on for where the lip of the gauge meets the top of the gauge bucket.  Still a bit of a work in progress in my head and probably needs some refinement.

Reg/Rec - consider mounting it on the underside of the seat pan where it will be in free-flowing air. Its probably fine where you plan it, but open air is far better.

Ya, I wondered about that.  I couldn't really find any literature on how hot that reg/rec really gets (especially the newer models like the ricks).  It seems from reading the interwebs that the old ones get far hotter, but if in the seat cavity really isn't a good spot, my alternate was going to be on the underside of the battery tray to try and conceal it a bit and save some of the aesthetics.

M-Lock - test it for reading throughh yur seat before you install it as you plan. Ive installed them from the underside in a similar location without incident. Youll probably need slightly longer screws too, I think M3 is the gauge...

I probably shouldn't have been more clear here, but I was planning on mounting it on the underside of the battery tray.  Basically drill a couple holes in the battery tray and run those M3's down and mount the m-lock unit basically in the open air under the tray.  Concealed but not behind any metal (as the manufacturers instructions say it won't work if it's behind metal).  Again, just initial thoughts, might change with advice from folks like you, and/or just changing my mind :-)

Pictures working again.

I dunno about the clutch switch. Without it, the bike wont start in gear, so how could anyone get hurt? Only get confused when it wont go...

I think youre onto something with the gauge install...

Under or underneath is fine for the Reg/Rec, just dont know about your seat and clearance is why I asked.

The M-Lock works like that, but you will need longer screws. Ask me how I know...

I did a 750 for Cognito with these same components, same locations, and wired them as youre describing. Came out discreet and reliable.

A final idea, with the m-buttin planned (sure i cant talk you out of it???) why not install it within the handlebars toond have just the single CONFIG wire rearward? Youd need a larger hole underneath your Renthals, but the wiring would be invisible.

Good call.  I didn't think about that.  One less set of wires I have to pull through the bars.

I'll post pics, when I get into the welding shop to build.

Yeah, I have prob 1/2" - 3/4" clearance above the seat pan.  Figured that would be enough of an airgap

Great idea!  I didn't even think about this, sold!

Thanks!  Yeah, this has for sure been an exercise in patience.  Promised myself I wasn't going to rush, and I was going to learn as much new stuff as I could.  Been a pretty awesome process, but I still don't have a bike to ride yet!  ;D

Still have a nagging feeling in the back of my head that I'm going to get it all ready to go, hit the start button and it's going to blow up and catch on fire or something :-)

Hey dont fret, that happens alot. Just remember, you built it so yu can rebuild it faster next time. And maybe get it go down the road too?  ;D ;)

You know Im only joking. Youve done great work and yull be rewarded with a very nice bike shortly!  :D

Ok,

So in what is becoming a bit of a theme for me... I didn't have as much time this weekend as I'd hoped.  Work is killing me.  So here's just the shortest of updates.

I marked out where I wanted to mount handlebar switches, punched center locations, drilled and tapped holes for the little mini switches I bought.

I used an old clutch cable with some tape on the end to feed all the wires through the bars to a hole I cut on the right-ish underside of the bars.

I also ran the brake light switch

This is how it all came out in the end.  Drilling into the bar, and clamping with all the bends meant that my placement was a little off (specifically the gap between the two switches between the left and right handlebars), maybe next time I'll see if someone has a mill, or I can create fixtures that would help keep bits from wandering, and allow me to go exactly perpendicular to the tube when drilling.  I'm still pretty happy with how it came out in the end.

I think I'm also going to take a scotch brite pad to the buttons to dull down that shine a little bit 8), too much shine and bling  ;)

I also am taking Cal's advice and I'm not going to use the m-Button to wire up all my switches.  I admittedly bought it cause it was "cool and part of the m-[product] line".  Sounds like with some of the older bikes, all of the control signals being send down that one bitty wire might cause problems.

I'm sure I'll do another build another day when I have more time, and I'll either use it then, or I'll sell it.  Thanks again Cal for the advice!

Seriously thinking about a PTO this week to make some serious headway on welding the speedo cup, wiring, and picking up parts, mounting rubber, etc.

Thanks again for taking a look, comments and feedback always welcome!

I bought a simple jig for drilling into bars... Makes it fool proof (for a fool like me  ;))

Hey Cal, want to mail that too me so I can borrow it for a week? I'll send it back with a few little sohc4 goodies.  ;)

PS: that wiring is looking nice. You might want to consider bolting the reg/reg in on the bottom of the electonics plate. More airflow for keeping things cool. Just my two cents, keep up the good work homie.

Should be fixed theslayedsaint, sorry for images continuing to drop off.  Google Photos must rate limit, or switch image URL's after a period of time.  I'll find a different way to host images to try and keep this from happening in the future.  I'm sure it's getting annoying.

Thanks for fixing it! the bars look really clean, way better then how mine turned out i also had issues with getting the holes right where i wanted them. the buttons you installed look great too, way cheaper then buying then from motogadget or other places. can't wait to spot your bike on the road this summer. keep up the good work.
