My 11:30pm WOT pull through the neighborhood didn't indicate much on the plugs.

If you start with brand new plugs and run it WOT in every gear, pull the clutch in and hit the killswitch and coast to a stop it will be plenty to get a good plug reading. If you did all this and they're still white then you're definitely still too lean.

Still having issues coming off idle. I believe the idle is still too lean as it really doesn't want to come up to 1/4 throttle (doesn't blubber but very very slow to throttle response) and if I let off it fast it dies. I'd like to bump the idle jet up from the #38s that are in there to the #40s that should be in the 022A set up. Anyone see any reason to go to #42s based on the air filter mod? Side note... like an idiot i didn't measure the idle jets as i intended to when I was swapping the mains. There are 3 or 4 different idle jets on Jets R Us which look similar enough. Anyone know which PN goes with the cb550 carbs so I can order them without tearing into the carbs to measure? Having a hard time finding this info.

42s will be way too rich, you should be fine with the 38s. Get the main jet sorted first then work your way back to the idle jets. On the JetsRUs site the correct idle jets for our CB550s are 99124-076. I've bought these and they worked for me (087A carbs, but shouldn't be different than the 069's). They list the dimensions on the site, you can always take a pair of calipers and measure yours to figure out which ones you need.

Have you checked the fiche for the PN?

http://www.westernhonda.com/fiche_select.asp

I did but it didn't register that the last 4 digits were the jet size. Remove those and its an easy search. Sorry for opening my mouth without thinking.

SOLUTION!!!!!!

So its been a while since I was able to keep working on the cb but got in there this week and figured it out. I ordered #40 idle jets because it seemed to be idling lean. To check this I would idle the bike and turn the choke on to richen it up. dies... every time. What gives? This confused me for a while since these are opposite problems. Re-synced the carbs. Re-checked for air leaks. put in the new idle jets. Re-synced. Re-checked for air leaks. The whole time when it neither the idled the idle screw nor the idle air screw did anything to change the idle. it was either running at 800-1000 rpm very rough or running decent above 2500-3000. Never in between.

So I changed focus to the ignition. Thought being the advance was stuck. Turns out the points were set waaaaaaay wrong. 15-20 degrees advanced. I'm shocked it ran at all. Cleaned up the advance and re-set the timing. Now she purrs like a kitten. Idle jet may be set a little rich but manageable. will tweak over the next few rides. Mid range is good and responsive and I'll do a plug chop soon to check the top end but for now its running well.

good news!  there is always a solution, not always easy to find, though.
