Exhaust Advice/Direction

Hello!

New to the forum and need some advice. I picked up a '72 CB500 Four from a family friend in good condition for fairly cheap. Bike hasn't been registered since '85 and I'm in the process of fixing her up. I'm in a bit of a dilemma.

I have the original 4 into 4 exhaust to which one pipe is pretty rusted through at the connection point of the pipe/tip. I have another that needs some TLC with a small rust hole in relatively the same spot (both right pipes). The two left pipes are in good condition. I'm considering the following options.

Sell the 4 into 4 to someone more passionate for original parts and buy a 4into1 or more preferably 4into2. The 4into2 I would want flare tips but I cant find anything that I can justify based on how much I purchased it for.

OR

Hang onto the original exhaust and try to find someone to fix them up. Anyone have experiences with this?

I attached some photos for reference. Looking for options for sub $500. Current pipes too far gone? Are they ripe for selling?

That pipe is reached. Repops are available but are very pricey. You can buy great aftermarket options that offer great performance, too, in the $500 range. Specifically check out the Hindle 4-2-1 offered by Ripple Rock (take advantage of the exchange rates with Canada) or the MotoGP 4-1 if you can find one.

From the looks of that pipe, its not salvageable except for cutting off the end and welding a new tip on. The others may also be far worse inside than you realize.

Its pretty limited in options for 2-1 pairs (I think thats what you meant with 4:2) so you could fabricate some of your own if the header portions of your pipes are still in good solid condition. If you weld to the original chromed sections, the chrome will damaged and stripping them and re-coating or re-chroming will be necessitated.

Some other options is the Delkevic header tied to Cone Engineering mufflers (for a 4:1) or cheap Mac 4:1 with a Cone. you'll have some light fabrication to handle with hanging the new tailpipe from a 4:1 onto your bike, but you should have little problems handling it.

I got my Yoshimura Header from a salvage place here in Michigan called Slicks Salvage. I believe they have a ebay store also. You can try them. I'm just running the header with nothing else. Boss can here me from my house 4 miles away coming to work lol.

If your left stock pipes are in good shape [no holes] you can sell them here to offset the cost of the new exhaust, maybe $75-100 each, depending on condition.

And BTW - $525 for a new stainless exhaust is a great price [I recently bought one]
