Crazy Prices
« on: April 26, 2016, 01:56:37 PM »
Is it me or does this guy think his bike is made of gold?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Honda-CB-/191854125817?forcerrptr=true&hash=item2cab65a2f9:g:H7kAAOSw7KJXETEs&item=191854125817

No chain guard and no overflow tubes for the carbs are a couple things I noticed...Seems ridiculous.

here is the "reason"...
"All work has been done professionally by Charlie's Place The Classic Honda Specialists in Glendale CA"

They charge high prices for what they do, and although they do it well we all know it is not magical.

My guess is this guy has that much in this bike - at least - and is trying to recoup.

For THAT kind of money, you could buy MY bike... (where I did all that same stuff AND the engine HAS been improved throughout).
I recently restored and sold a 77 cb750f, and am nearly finished with a (former basket case) cb750k5.  This is a place to share, learn and enjoy.  I am grateful to and for 99+% of this site's membership.

That bike's been on craigslist for about a month ($5,000).  There's no doubt he has at least that much into it.

There are a couple of $6000 cafe racers for sale around seattle-tacoma too.

One had a fork conversion and another had the $2000 benji's seat/tank combo.  Both bikes were pretty stunning.

That fella's dreamin', if it was done all completely original (which it is NOT), that would be a normal asking price in Australia.

I would think twice about the knowledge a builder has when he calls a brake master cylinder reservoir "a brake fluid holder". They've obviously never read a manual or have enough motorcycle experience to know what each part is called. I'm not buying a bike from someone like that.

The "Café Professional Builder" bubble is eventually going to burst and I think it already has started. I enjoy the looks of a good build but these guys who think they are going to be the next, "OCC" of café Bikes are out to lunch and The Hipsters are loosing interest.

I admit I am more of a Restoration/OEM look guy, but I can appreciate a good custom build and the work that goes into one. With that said, what is up with the no front fender look? Don't these bikes ever get caught in the rain? Are fenders really that ugly? Do they slow you down? Is having a garden hose spraying in your face on a rainy ride that much fun? Maybe it's because I am a dirt bike guy and have snapped a few fronts off on New England trees. That no front fender thing gets old quick.
I like poetry, long walks on the beach, and poking at dead things with a stick.

I don't care who believes me but; this guy posted a little clip of a 78 cb750 running with pods and yadda yadda on his instagram. I've spent a good amount of time on cracking the code on pods on 78's and the jetting. So I messaged him basically saying' "hey that bike sounds pretty well tuned, I'd like to cross reference jetting with you to what I've done previously with PD carbs". And his response was, "Oh I don't even remember, but in my opinion the pd's should be tossed in the ocean and replaced with roundtops". Then he went on to message me again with a p.s. "but if you have a 78 you have to change out the head with an older one to put the good carbs on it".....it took all the power in me to stop myself from getting in a stupid internet argument and just leave it, so I just dropped it at that. Long story short; I wouldn't spend my hard earned dollars on something from this guy that might look flashy because he knows how to paint but runs like dog crap because he has no mechanical inclination whatsoever.

Unrealistic expectations.  Most people into these bikes are attracted to them because they get to perform the work themselves.  I haven't met anybody that want these old bikes after they've been "restored".  Collectors aren't really going after them unless the specific model is unique in some way, like sand-cast.  Idk but my guess is this guy is lives in a echo chamber.

Maybe he'll get the hint when the bids don't even come close to reserve.

I can almost guarantee ya that anyone riding in the seattle rain is most certainly not riding a CB around.

BMW, maybe.  Perhaps an unfortunate Vespa owner.

I don't ride in rain (rather, I avoid it best I can) because the visibility from inside my helmet turns to NIL in about 35 seconds.  Between the raindrops and my breath condensating inside.  Danger Will Robinson Danger.
