79 CB650 Brakes
« on: April 27, 2016, 01:52:44 PM »
Hello
I am having issues with my front Brakes. i bought brand new master cylinder, also re-furbished calipers, with all new components. the brake lines are original, but not damaged or cracked. I cannot get the master cylinder to bleed. my procedure:
Top up MC start at left brake caliper hook up drain line to catch can. pump brake 10-20 times and hold, then release    caliper drain bolt. I feel the brake lever depress and see fluid and air come out. I repeat this 2-3 times, and do other side. I got both caliper to drain fluid no air, but my brake lever is still very very soft. it does not get hard at all. I also bleed the MC prior to this procedure.
When I squeeze the lever I can see the brake lines flexing or expending? is this normal?
Thank you

First, get RID of those original brake lines. They are junk and it doesn't matter how good they look. They are 37 years old and were not that great when new. The outside can look good, but the inside can be and probably is in terrible shape. 37 years of old brake fluid and moisture has taken its toll for sure. Get new lines and then start the process again. One issue I had on my 650 was the bleeder screws in the calipers had corroded threads from years of moisture. The threads in the calipers were good, but I had to install new bleeders because the corrosion was allowing a leak. It was very slight, but fixing it made a difference in the feel of my brakes.

thank you for the feedback,
i bought all new parts for the calipers. I have new bleeder screws, and all parts for both calipers.
Not sure where to look for brake lines? I have installed a 79 GL1000 front end on my 650, and running clip ons, so the single main line from MC going to splitter was way too long. the lines from the spliter to each caliper are correct length since they came on the front end conversion.  I would like to maybe go with SS lines.
