Alright, I'm just going to brass wheel polish these bastards and put them in. Enough contemplating on how to do this. A brass wire wheel should pull my rust off, leave the zinc plating, and clean it up enough to make it look half way decent. I need some action.
If there is rust on them, then the zinc is already gone and it will rust again unless replated or sealed up in some way. Just get the ARP SS ones and HD main studs from APE/cbrzone.com and not worry about it.

This is what I ordered. Only ones missing are the small cam chain tension adjusting screw (this is special, reuse old one or buy new from Honda) and the main bearing ones (use APE studs). Someone double check this please.

Final question... anybody know what the original case bolts are made of? Just regular old steel that has been zinc plated?

They're "regular old steel" as in not stainless steel, not aluminum, not titanium, not neutronium, etc.

just use nail polish on them after install , if you are just wire wheeling them..

I've never installed bearing or cylinder studs before, from the pictures I've seen they are rods, threaded on both ends. I understand the install procedure for cylinder studs, but how does that work when installing the bearing studs if there is no bolt to ratchet and torque down to? Sorry, just slightly confused on that.

I double-nutted the crank studs to turn them in (with a tiny dab of red locktite in the upper case hole) to 8ftlbs.
Easy peasy.

So when you are looking at the bottom of your engine (upside down), where the bearing studs are, there are no bolt heads? This is confusing the hell out of me.

Studs are threaded on both ends, 180* opposed to each other. So when you tighten a bolt onto the exposed portion, it continues to turn the stud into the case. Installing studs is done with nuts, or specialized tools. Since the torque value of studs into cases is pretty low, double-nutting with a torque wrench is pretty straight forward (as Fly stated).

Crank bearing studs shown with (ARP thread sealant treated) new nuts.

huh, so the bearing studs don't thread up from under the bottom case like a bolt would. You thread them down into the lower case half (double nutted to torque to spec), then thread a new nut on at the bottom. I think that's right? haha

You thread them down into the lower UPPER case half (double nutted to torque to spec), put the two case halves together with an appropriate sealant then thread a new nut on at the bottom. I think that's right? haha

Do you know of the thread pitches? Can't find much. Lots of places offer 0.75, 1.0 , 1.25, and even 1.5/1.75/2.0 thread. I was just wondering if you knew before I took a big ol' bag of bolts to the hardware store and checked the thread pitch of every single on of them haha.

6mm is 1.0
8mm is 1.25
Old stock 10mm on yur bike is fine thread in some locations (1.0) but you can use 1.5 on bolts where you buy the corresponding nuts (engine mounts)

The brake caliper bolts, and a few other are the odd ball 10mm's

ARP ones are the correct pitch EXCEPT for the 10mm one, but it does use a corresponding nut on the crankcases so not an issue. The only other odd ball 10mm fine threads are in the lower triple and the brake caliper for (for the 750s, maybe others too). These I just went with chrome plated ones from the same site.

I use a mix of caustic soda,  EDTA & a dash of  trietholamine (all available on eBay) in a slow cooker at 70 deg C. It's the zinc stripping method that's used in industry. Very gentle on base metal. Here are some parts I had replated after that method of stripping plus bead blast of rusty/corroded parts

This batch (plus a few more parts  not in the photo) cost 50 GBP to have plated in BZP professionally locally in the UK  (some bright passivated, some (eg spoke nipples) gold chromate passivated.

That is a hell of a deal. There aren't Mayne places around me that do zinc plating, lots of Chrome though. Best quote I got from places I would have to ship my bolts to was 120 dollars just for 30 or so bolts. Crazy!
