How do you lock up your bike?
« on: May 06, 2016, 04:36:19 AM »
So this morning about 5am my wife was woken up by the sound of someone trying to kickstart my cb750.  The stearing lock has long since been broken so it is the only bike in the lot without a lock on it.  On my vt1100 I use to just put a padlock through the front disk but my 750 dosnt have cross drilled brakes.

What kind of space do you have for the bike? Is it your own, or rented?

Bare minimum... get a U-Lock and put it through the front disk "spokes".

If you own the parking space, have an anchor set into the ground so you can chain the bike down, like you would see on a ferry.

my steering lock is also dead.
if i have to leave it out of sight and outside for longer, i throw a chain through the rear wheel and lock it on one of the shocks. it's at least a deterrent for the casual thief who otherwise could ride off, and well visible so hopefully looks like a less easy target. i'd love a disc lock but my rotors are not drilled and i haven't yet found one that fits around them.
guys with a van could of course still take it away...

parking it at home is not a problem as i have it in a secure garage. otherwise a ground anchor like evan says would be the best thing.

The early CB750's can be powered up by merely taking the top fuse out and sticking it in the slot between the top and second fuse in the 3 fuse box. Find a better way to secure the bike and keep really good insurance on it. Drill a single hole in a rotor to install a pad lock, but if they really want it, it's going to be theirs.

This bike has all custom wiring (I worked as a electrition building firetrucks) so in order to hot wire it you actually have to open the electric box and jump it at the key.  I had been thinking of doing a cross drilled disk for just that reason.  I looked in to gps tracking for this reason and it looks like I can do it for about $20 a year using a prepay cell plan and a gps tracker (about $25 online) then just stick it in he electrical box and have it charge when the bike is running.  It might even pay for its self since my insurance offers a discount for gps antitheft devises being installed.
This is the lot with the bike in its normal place

This is how it was when she stopped them

It is a parking lot at my apartment building with a not very solid ground mostly dirt and broken asphalt

I put a cable lock through the spokes and around the fork when I got it back in place and then filed a police report, we have alot of brake ins with the homeless pepole trying to find something to pawn.  Last year they got the toolbox out of my 4runner and then my helmet out of my locked trunk on my yamaha a cople of weeks later as well as pepole stealing gas.

GPS tracker won't do #$%* if it ends up at a chop shop...

Ask your landlord if you can install a ground anchor.

Look into getting a lockable cover for the bike, too.

can you rent some indoor garage space nearby? someone might be happy to get a few bucks for having your bike stand next to his car, and it would be safer. would also protect it from sun, rain etc.

the thing with gps tracking and such is, that it kicks in after the damage is already done. it does nothing for prevention.

You have two bikes there, why not take a big chain and lock one bike to the other?

+1  chain/padlock through one of the wheels, or even better an expensive cable/D-lock so it can't be cut with bolt cutters

I hate to ask, what part of the country do you live in? Here in NJ you can't do anything but in some places you could have practically beaten the crook to death without even thinking twice. I hate #$%*bags that touch other people's stuff. It's one thing to be a petty thief and steal some condoms from Walmart so you don't knock up Betty Sue, but to steal from another person? Lame.

I like the idea of a lockable cover, how do they work for you? A lockable cover is what I want plus I'll be wrapping-through the bike w/ a good cable/U-lock.

i have a cover that can be locked with a cable to the bike. i think a cover is good in making the bike less visibly stand out but it won't prevent a thief who knows what he's looking for, from peering underneath even if locked. also it's only a cover. with tools it can be removed easily. or even quicker, the 3 guys and a van trick takes only a minute and the bike with or without cover and locks is gone.

Glad the jerks didn't make off with your bike!! I'd be looking for a house/flat with a garage to keep those bikes in

You could also rent a small little storage locker(w/ security) fairly cheap.

I have a 72 CB and this dude drilled my rotors and resurfaced them for 80 bucks. Now I put a disc lock on it and have no problems:

I have GPS trackers hidden on all my bikes, just in case. If they want your bike, they will get it. With GPS you can get it back and maybe have some fun watching the thief "fall down", "a whole bunch", before the cops arrive.

In a locked garage. I probably should put anchors in the floor to chain the bikes, maybe one of these days. For my restored bikes I have agreed value insurance policies.

I worry when out and about leaving my bike out of sight, and my helmet too as I usually don't carry it with me unless I'm at work. Never had anyone mess with or steal my stuff though. I'd like to find a simple easy way to secure the bike better when out and about that doesn't involve additional things to carry that won't fit on the bike without modification.

I've got one of those Kryptonite "New York" chains which has a comfortable cover around it and a disc lock to hold it together, but the thing is heavy to sling over my back so I usually leave it at home.

I keep my bike covered when I'm at my apt. & even though all kinds of junk goes on inside these small low rent places, they don't bother stuff outside;it wasn't like that when I lived 'in that part of town' down in High Point,NC. where if i left anything locked-up outside they'd find a way to steal it.I rented a small storage a few miles from my residence and that solved it.We had a keypad/code and cameras which was secure.

Well cops here don't realy mess with stolen bikes they take a report and wait for it to show up in impound.  I have been realy tempted to put a alarm on the bike and keep the 9mm (mosen nagant is a bit cumbersume indoors) in the bedside table since I have a cleen sight on the bikes from the window.

Sometimes with radios it is better to have it be easily removable because if thieves want it out and can't then sometimes they trash your dash and or wiring in the dash and it very difficult and costly to get that fixed. A deep hole filled with concrete and some heavy rocks with a good heavy cable and disc lock can be a real help keeping it from being stolen. You can get kryptonite cables as long as 15 feet, if you thread it through the frame of both bikes then they aren't going anywhere quickly.

Best solution, move and put those deterrents into play at the new place. Also, if you have a usual spot at work you can often get permission from the employer to sink a hole with concrete and put one of the loops in it.  Just be sure on any that some thief hasn't come along to compromise the loop when you aren't watching... I guess acid or liquid nitrogen could be used to cause it to be brittle and then a good BFHammer comes in to finish it off.  Just have to keep the liquid nitrogen sources be limited, or thieves too stupid to get it...

That sucks man, Would be awesome to get your hands on someone like that and just beat the piss out of them. Maybe chaining your bikes (both) together? I've done some searching on this and there are some pretty beefy locks out there that someone with a normal lock cutter can't get through. That's just terrible, because now everytime you set your head down to bed, you'll be wondering if some knucklehead is out there trying to jack your bikes....

I hope this doesn't happen to you again buddy.
