Front bearing retainer ring removal
« on: May 07, 2016, 06:36:15 PM »
Anyone have a technique they may have used to remove the front bearing retainer on a '78 - 750A?  This thing is frozen solid - seems the previous owner may have put a rear retainer in as the two retainer are different. One has 4 slots - the one that's stuck is only two slots.
At this point even a way to remove it without messing up the hub would be good as the retainer ring is pretty much fried and will need replacements.

Any help would be great!

Worst case scenario:

Use a drill with a small drill bit (maybe 1/8") to drill some holes through the retainer in order to weaken it in a few locations.  Use gentle pressure so you'll feel when you bottom out against the steel of the hub.  Then take a chisel and hammer, and catch the edge of the retainer, and then hammer towards the axle, parallel to the spokes.  This will break the retainer and push it "in", that is, away from the threads it's engaged with.  Once you get it moving you'll be able to pop the remnants out.

I've done a couple front retainers this way when they were too chewed up to remove normally.

Lay it flat.  Spray it w pb blaster allowing it to 'pool' in the seam between the retainer and the hub.
Add more as needed over the next day.
Wipe it dry, and with a torch or heat gun, get it really hot.
A punch, set in the slot and a few good whacks from a deadblow hammer will get it to spin.

The front retainer usually only has two slots. It's smaller. You did already drill out where it was staked?
