I'd like to see some more steering dampers that people have mounted, also.

Not because of tank slappers, but running a chopper, at low speeds you have the flop issue to deal with and I'm thinking a damper might help with that.

I've been "considering" (read: procrastinating) about this for some years now, don't really think I need one, but I think i sort of want one.

I have been riding motorcycles for just short of 60 years. I made sure each was in good condition with good rubber. I have exceeded 100 mph many many times on many different bikes from USA, Japan, Germany and Italy. None had a steering damper nor did I feel compelled to install one if the factory had not. I've heard of tankslappers but never had the pleasure of experiencing one. I must be weird or something

The worst bit is; the OP asked for pictures of peoples installed dampers. He did not solicit input as to why one should, or should not use a damper. In fact, he even went so far as to say, a recent experience is driving the decision whether its the correct decision or not. Respect his choice and needs. If those who prefer not to use a damper simply toddled along, this entire thread would not have devolved.

I believe the OP even repeated his request for those who poo-poo dampers to graciously piss off. And yet, the theorists and opiners persist with all the reasons in the world they're not needed, despite numerous bikes of all vintages having them.
Funny thing is it all started with your buddy...didn't ever see you mention anything to him and he's devolved this conversation the most by insulting everybody that had a difference of opinion.

Retro...

Delta, if you don't know why dampers are used, after being told numerous times already,  its a waste of time explaining it over and over again..

Always the peach!!! An example of his typical response from page one.
The same guy that says installing one on my bike did nothing says they're so important that they need to be adjusted while riding. Makes no sense, he's rambling in circles.

I think it began with Reply #2 actually (Deltarider). Then you waded in with your noise about Retro's response as to why people installed it on the right; your assertion that it needn't be adjusted while riding. He's not "my" buddy, he's a member of the Forum whom I've never met. I just happen to agree with him on some things. As I do agree with FunJimmy and even you on some things.

Really? This is Reply #2 from Deltarider. How does that reply have anything to do with the tangent RR gets himself off on? I know he's volatile, but I have a hard time believing he's that easy to kick start.

I'm more interested to see more of the box in the far left of your first photo, the box in red and black with a yellow stripe.

Ha ha, you're right there Steve, you know I used to get pissed off with mods warning us to act our age, back when we actually had mods, but now I wish Glenn or someone would occasionally step in and shut down the usual boring rants that seem to appear all over the forum nowadays. I mean, how many posts does it take for one guy to tell the other guy that he's the smartest feller here? ;D

Yes! Very intersting thread if you start it! The forum is global so the oil and tires differs depending on what available, need due to climate and use.

Actually thought about trying to adapt one of the screw down types to my 750.

This one is on a T500 and looks pretty simple (and compact).

those is primitive  and dont have any hydralik.adjusting ..only make stering harder..so even a slov move at the handel vill be hard.

..not as a hydralik system hvere slow movents are going free through the damper and only the villant and hard mowes are damped..
like chok  absovers on cars..so carefull soft driving you dont feel the damper(the hole idea use hydralik dampers)
the simpel  ones..just make stering hardere..not damping anything..used  often on sidecar riding..so it runs straight..and you dont need to turn so often
i kan not speak english/but trying!!

Here's mine before the oil cooler. Glad I didn't weld on the frame mount as it interferes with the cooler. It's a puzzle getting a Setrab 113 cooler, a dampener and a fairing all in the same vicinity.

I remember Stoner getting a vicious steering head shake on the downhill from Lukey Heights toward Turn 10 at Phillip Island.  It was so bad his calipers malfunctioned. And that was a multi-million dollar GP bike. Even with the best equipment and a world class set up, sometimes head shake happens.

Make sure you get a damper that will go through it's full range both ways before it bottoms out on either end. There is a big difference in sizes out there.

So, speaking of mounting options, I've been pondering geometry.

The stock CB750 lower triple tree has a threaded hole on the right side between the steering tube and the right fork leg.

If you use this hole, and mount the damper on the right side of the frame, it seems pretty clear that you'll get a decent "sweep", that is, the distance between the hole and the right side frame downtube will be shortest at full right steering lock, and longest at full left steering lock.

On the other hand, if you use that same hole but mount the damper on the LEFT side of the frame, so that it's crossing diagonally across the front of the frame, do you still get the same amount of "sweep"?

I could math this out, and will when I get the time, but I thought I'd ask to see what you gents knew about it first.

thanks
