Degreeing a 335 Webcam
« on: May 23, 2016, 04:44:34 pm »
Have an issue with the 335 Webcam for my CB550.  The cam card specs are 102.5 for the intake lobe center and 113.5 for the exhaust lobe center.  When I set the intake at 102.5 the exhaust is at 102!  Checked and all the cylinders are similar.  Called Webcam and was advised the 335 is a Kenny Harmon grind.  Kenny was half of H&C Cams and a go to guy in the 50's and 60's.  They advised the specs were supplied by Kenny and they could not confirm the accuracy.  As long as I had the piston/valve clearance it was OK to run it.

I did some checking and nearly every other cycle cam I checked has the same lobe center for both the intake and exhaust.  Could not find another cam with an 11 degree difference.  Not sure if I have a "bad" cam, the cam card is wrong, or something else is going on.

Appreciate any feedback

Not sure what to tell you except Web's cards are never remotely accurate. They have told me the numbers were to be measured at the lobe or some such, I'm surprised you got one at all, they seemed to stop including them. The only one I have is a mild street cam that made sense to time straight up. Maybe Mike Rieck can offer some advice.

Touched base with Mike Rieck.  He was not too concerned with the cam not meeting the "specs".  As long as there is adequate piston/valve/head clearance his advice is to see how it runs.  He did suggest changing the intake lobe center to 102 degrees and the exhaust to 102.5.

Makes sense to me. Check for clearance at multiple crank degrees to be certain, 8-10-12-15d.
