Spoke Wrench?
« on: May 14, 2016, 06:54:04 AM »
Getting ready to put my wheels back together on my 76 750F, and I realized I don't have a spoke wrench.  A quick google search turns up a huge variety in all different sizes.  The nipples I got from Buchanan's by way of Dime City (tricky, that) measure 5.4 mm flat to flat.  Any recommendations on a good, cheap spoke wrench?  Also curious about some I saw that designate the sizes as 8, 9, 10 and 11.  Any clue what these correspond to in  mm?

Hey, I don't know about how the sizing works, but I just rebuilt both wheels on my 78 CB550, I believe the spoke nipples are the same size. The spoke wrench I used was a #9. As for cheap and good, I don't know, I borrowed it but it's pretty much just a regular wrench for turning bolts, I don't think you have to worry too much about poor quality. If your size is 5.4mm, the wrenches come in all sorts of sizes, find one near 5.4mm

My #9 is just sightly smaller than 6mm when measuring with a ruler. The other end of the wrench is a #8, it's slightly larger than 6mm.

Order the proper wrench from Buchanan's, $20. You'll be glad to have the extra leverage, and won't round out your nipples

If we want to get really particular then Buchannans also sells a spoke torque wrench. So you don't over/undertighten the nipples.
