crankcase breather element
« on: November 24, 2006, 02:49:37 pm »
Is it okay to attach a breather element right to the nipple on the crank case.  Currently the hose is just hanging under the seat.  Is it neccesary to keep the hose and put the breather on that.  A breather just mounted on the crankcase vent nipple would look much cleaner.

Wondering how bad it would be to just plug it?

Don't just plug it, depending on how well it's plugged pressures will force oil through seals and gaskets.
Venting also helps the rings seal better, they just work better with a pressure differential.

By using a hose you can determine where any oil is going to drip and position it so it doesn't drip in view, or onto something where it will burn and smell.

I'd never think of plugging that.  Honda didn't so neither would I.  I think I may just put a small generic filter on the nipple and call it a day.  Too many hoses and cables going everywhere as it is.  I saw some $10 3/8 chrome breathers at Pep Boys yesterday in either blue red or grey.  I think the chrome and grey will fit the bill.

I ran mine to the outside of the bike (via hose) , and then to a small crankcase breather I got from the old v-twin shop I used to work at.
My filter/breather has always smoked/steamed, so putting it under the tank wouldnt work for me  ;D
