NEVER feed your dog this kind of peanut butter (it can kill them)

There's been a number of reports lately of dogs who are winding up dead because of their beloved peanut butter.

How?

It has to do with a specific ingredient that's making it's way into peanut butters.

That ingredient is xylitol.

Xylitol is an artificial sweetener that you'll recognize from things like gum and candy.

And while it's generally "safe" for humans to eat, it can be deadly for dogs.  Just a small amount of it can cause severe liver damage and can even kill your dog.

From my research, Ive found 5 brands of peanut butter that have recently added xylitol to their ingredients.

I'm listing these brands below...

- Go Nuts Co

- Hank's Protein Plus Peanut Butter

- Krush Nutrition

- Nuts N More

- P28

Now luckily most of these are NOT the most popular brands. 

And in fact, they tend to only be sold at specialty shops or health food stores.

But I still wanted to alert you to this...

Because if your dog is anything like mine, they probably love peanut butter.

Feel free to forward this on to your friends or family that have dogs so they are aware of this...

Or you can always feed them DOG food.

I would never even think of giving my dog any type of PB. 

Rarely eat it myself.

will have to tell my daughter about this as she is always giving her dog old peanut butter jars to tear up.

Yeah I saw this a while back. My dogs get a metric ton of PB every month. Wonderful for their coat. Surprisingly, I buy the no name brand from Safeway because of how much they go through but it uses all natural ingredients.

 A friend's an engineer at a plant where they make that sweetener from birch bark, go figure.

My old dog Sally loved my peanut butter sandwiches. Obviously there's nothing wrong with "normal" PB, she lived until she was almost 17, or around 100 in dog years. Her farts were pretty bad though, not that the PB could be blamed for that, she ate anything that wasn't nailed down........... ;D

 My dog loves old peanut butter jars also. Be on the look out for some of those wonderful dog treats imported from China that were killing dogs also. Not sure if there still around. There are a lot of things you shouldn't feed your dog but people still do. For example grapes.. Did you know they are actually poisonous to a dog? I didn't until I gave one to my dog which made him very ill.

Peanut butter? Good stuff for a dog just make sure its all natural and you generally should be fine.

Xylitol is all natural.  As Don said, it's made from bark.  It's a sugar alcohol, rather than an artificial sweetener. 
Usually you will find it in sugar-free products and it is actually better than Maltitol (most common sugar alcohol) which can really upset your stomach and has a higher glysemic index score.

Yep my dog loves it and so do I. If it has more than two ingredients and they aren't peanuts and salt then it's not real peanut butter.

I think it also depends on the size of the dog. My Germen Shepherds seem to  pass everything. One got some grapes once and had no ill effects and he also broke into a cabinet, then got a large tin of Hershey's chocolate out, and actually made multiple punctures in the top with his teeth, pried it off and ate about a pound and a half of chocolate.

not all dog foods are created equal.  Several of the big names in kibble and treats are made with such low quality ingredients and bonding chemicals that they make the list of "worst things to feed your dog".

Spoil your dog, feed them the foods you'd want to eat too!

Sometimes keeping a dog from eating some types of food goes right out the window when you turn your back for about 5 seconds. Ever owned a beagle? Yeah... Best not to buy the stuff at all.
