How to lift 550 for maintenance
« on: May 19, 2016, 04:42:43 PM »
I bought a hydraulic lift to raise the bike but the 4 into 1 header hangs below the frame and I don't see a spot where the jack pads will sit flush on the frame.

Has any modified these jacks or is there a better way to raise the bike?

If you want to use a standard bike jack you'll either have to remove the exhaust or modify the jack to accommodate the exhaust.  I've never done it, so I can't offer any help in that area, but I can say that in all the rebuilds I've done I've never needed a bike lift.  I use the center stand and a floor jack to get both wheels off the ground.  Others have successfully used straps to hang the front of the bike from a rafter.

I use the standard/cheap foot peddle motorcycle lift on my CB550F.  I just position 2X4's under the frame which allows me to have the lift arms lower than the pipes.

Yup, additional lift blocks may be the best way to jack up your bike.

Unless you trade the hydraulic lift in for a set of track stands!

Thanks for the ideas.  I'll see what I can come up with.  I should add my center stand is removed and gone but perhaps the mounts where it was can be used for something as a lift point.

You can buy a center stand and use it for maintenance, you don't have to reinstall it altogether, just when you need it.

That's exactly how I store my bike. Just don't use the spring.

I built one of these

Works great with 4-4s

How it's made, use 2 sizes of hole saw to create the cradle for the plumbing bits

Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

That's so wonderful you could sell it.  Just add some adjustability to final spacing between the u-shaped frame grabbers and it could be used for any dual tube cradle frame bike (HD honda teinlh borton whatever!
I recently restored and sold a 77 cb750f, and am nearly finished with a (former basket case) cb750k5.  This is a place to share, learn and enjoy.  I am grateful to and for 99+% of this site's membership.

That is a great idea, well done!
I picked up some viper paddock stands on eBay and spools for the rear. Going to get a front headlift attachment for my front stand so I can take the wheel off. They seem very solid.

On a side note, I have a cb750 center stand im not using if anyone is interested.

I use a 4" ratchet strap attached to the joists in my garage.

Allows a lot of room when working under the bike
