Topic: Matching engine numbers on a sandcast and diecast engine

I have acquired a genuine sandcast engine ( and frame only 20 numbers apart) with an extremely low number, well under 1000. Yesterday at the same place I came upon an identical numbered engine, diecast.
I was told that the second numbered diecast engine was probbaly/likely a warranty replacement and should not have had the same number or should have had some sort of identifier.
Anyone have any fact or theories, lies or guesses to support this truly unique situation?
Either way I have a very low diecast engine number that I have also found a 1969 frame to be fitted into, so I dont lose either way, but I sure would like to know a little more about this unique situation...........
And I need a set of carbs for this bike, hmmm that might be alittle harder to do.

Replacement engines were shipped blank and were supposed to be stamped at the point of use.  Is the sandcast engine damaged in the sprocket area?

One of them has been re-stamped. Have to see pictures to determine which one has authentic Honda font.

The sandcast is undamaged, and I assume that the diecast is non original stamps but I will check my other engines and compare fonts.....

Ill have pics tomorrow, as they are buried under a pile of parts I acquired from a wrecker......
About 30 engines, assorted frames, partially dismantled bikes from 1970 (2 of) up to 1977, 40 tanks, sidecovers, forks, 40 odd large storage boxes and more stuff than I can count. Currently filling 2x 20' storage units and my trailer and back yard.

Once I sort thru it all, I plan to sell as much of the left overs as I can, to fund the resto of the 1969/70 low engine numbered bike.....
In the meanwhile can someone tell me just how rare a set of the original four cable carbs are? And in the absence of a set if those, whats the next most appropriate option for a replacement set?

Kinda, maybe a little rare. Approximately 44,000 sets shipped on '69-'70 models. What's rare is 4 cables with 28 caps. Factory recall relegated most #28 caps to the trash barrel.

Don, if someday you'll have similar luck finding two 14xxx engines please promise to sell one for me. What is your frame number? I have 14358.
