Author Topic: Sprocket carrier wont sit evenly (Read 2455 times)

Hey guys, first time poster here.
Im a new owner of a 77 cb750k.

Ive been tinkering with the bike for the past few weeks doing some regular maintenance to freshen it up and make it road worthy.
I noticed my sprocket carrier to be slightly offset a little resulting in an uneven or un balanced sproket when the wheel spins. I removed the rear wheel, inspected the axle, sprocket it self, cush rubbers.
Eveything appears to be ok. I spun just the sprocket carrier on the axle and it appeared to be true.

Any ideas as to what my issue here could be? I've removed the cush drive rubbers and the carrier sits in the rim evenly without them. With them installed, they seem to want to sit deeper to one side.
I can only assume these are my issues and i should replace them. But before i go spend money in new ones, hearing some feed back would be greatly appreciated.

Are you installing the carrier dry? It may be that it's not seating all the way due to friction on the rubbers. Try applying a bit of oil on the lugs of the carrier before you install it, then wiggle and twist the carrier as you press it into place.

You are not getting the carrier locked in past the locking O-Ring put a little oil on the O-Ring. You may even have to jump on it to get it to pop in. Use some wood and lay the wheel on it if you have to jump on it as to not scar any thing up. Another good reason to buy HondaMan's book

It will and should be flush when it is together correctly.

It can sometimes be difficult to seat it, I've used a rubber mallet to persuade it.

Ill try lubing it. I not 100 sure i saw an o-ring in there. Unless its buried under the mounds of grease packed into the carrier.
These are also not spoked wheel set, i believe there the comstar rims but i could be wrong. They have the 4 double sided cush rubbers..

How greasy dirty is it? That could be a contributing factor.

I cleaned it up pretty good. Ive inspected everything and it all seems to look pretty normal. I tried greasing the rubber and it helped a bit to slide it in there and get seated. But still wants to lean to one side a bit. Its a bit better when the its all torqued down.. But still has a slight wobble.
Maybe im being too picky.. But to my knowledge, it should be pretty true and balanced no?

i use spray silicone on the rubber parts, Like Frank said ride it around the block and see if it seats.

The edges of that bearing retainer look pretty knackered... The grooves seem to have metal sticking up. Is that causing the sprocket hub to not fully seat?

Some of the smaller portions of the rubber look like they might be getting pinched but that may just be a shadow in the photo. Are they deformed in any way obvious?

The retainer does appear to be a little beat up. someone really went to town to get it tightened by the looks of it. I might try filing the burr off of it back to flat and see if that helps. Good eye! Than again, I'm not even sure the retainer comes into contact with anything on the carrier by the looks of it.
As for the rubber, i wouldn't say its deformed. probably a little dryer and hard than it once was..

Are all of the Cush drive rubbers the same height? Maybe someone stuck a mismatched set in there in the past. Question everything! Do picture searches, study parts drawings. Be a student. You'll get it!

I'd spray the rubbers with silicone and mark the metal with a sharpee so you can see where it rubs. X2 on deburring it first.

Make sure all of your spacers are the right ones and installed in the correct order. Make sure the ends are square.

there are at least two types of rubbers. the part connecting the two pieces may be hanging on the rib....check against stock hub to see if that is lower than the outside of the cavity that holds the rubbers.

You said it fits fine without the rubber, that's a pretty good clue to start off with.

There's four different ways you can plug the carrier into the hub, try it in all four positions, and see if the high spot is always in the same place relative to the rim, or if it moves with the orientation of the carrier. That should narrow down things even more.

Files the retainer, didnt seem to do anything as it doesnt rest on anything.

Cush rubbers measure all within 1mm of each other.

The side the blue tape is marked, is the side that consistently site higher. No matter which orientation you have the carrier or rubbers.

Same story for the low side.

Third pic is some silicone spray showing even bearing on the bearing.

The first pic shows an even seat, with everything installed, minus the cush rubbers.
Sits a heavy 1/16th higher because it rests on the bearing and bearing spacer thing.

The second pic is the carrier seated evenly with no cush rubbers and no bearing spacer.
