Petcock Options
« on: May 22, 2016, 08:51:51 AM »
I'm rebuilding a 1971 500 that sat idle for many years.  After new coils, plugs, plug wires, points, condensers, and a carburetor rebuild the bike fires right up and sounds good.  The original tank is covered with rust on the inside, which I hope to clean and coat.  I have a good looking tank from a 1976 550 donor bike to use until the original is ready, but the petcock leaks through in the off position.  From what I've found on this site and on the web,  replacement internals ( a small plastic cone) are not available.  This is a dual outlet 20mm unit.  I hate to spend $75 to $100 on a new petcock when I am just going to sell the tank with the donor bike in a few months when the original tank is ready.  There is a a single outlet 20mm unit available at 4into1 that might work if I put a tee fitting in to feed both carburetor supply lines.  Has anyone tried this petcock or have other suggestions?
Thanks,
John

You can certainly split a single hose in two, Honda did this on the later bikes. It does tend to limit the top speed slightly for lean-ness (on the 750, anyway) but I doubt the 500 would be negatively affected.
See SOHC4shop.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.
