CB650Z main bearings
« on: May 22, 2016, 12:21:48 PM »
A few questions I have so far 2 weeks into Honda ownership:

This page doesn't seem to show the part number for main or big-end bearings (items 9 and 7 respectively): http://manuals.sohc4.net/cb650/technical_reference/PL65079_04.pdf why would that be?

My main bearings are worn and could do with replacing.  The manual talks about colour codes.  Where do I find the colouring on the bearing? I have small flecks of a mustard yellow on one of the long sides - would that be it?  Can't tell if it's just a stain...

I can't seem to find many main bearings for a 650 at all on the internet, no matter what colour.  Are these not available anymore?  If not, what should I do?

Hmmm, no replies yet: doesn't bode well.  The most worn part is the bottom shell where it takes the kick of ignition.  What if I were to swap the bearing shells top and bottom?  Probably not good engineering practice, but what is there to do with obsolete parts?!

Check David Silver Spares USA site and CMSNL.  Shipping for CMSNL will be a PITA.

Thanks for the tip cafe racer fan.

Being new to these, I'm still a bit confused by he coloring/size information.  Following the service manual, my crankcase I.D. code is CCCCC whilst the main journal O.D. code is 2 (the only number I could see stamped on one of the flywheels).  This, according to the table in the guides gives me Black.  However looking at my bearings in broad daylight the colouring actually looks light Brown (not Yellow like I had thought before).

What's more, when I measure the journal O.D. with both digital vernier callipers and a micrometer (both calibrated ok on a 25 mm calibration rod), I get readings of exactly 33.00 mm, meaning that surely my crankshaft should have been stamped with a 1, not a 2.  This would then give me Brown bearings, just like the ones I took out.

Gah!  Confused!  :o  Can anyone make sense of this?

Thanks again...
